CONFIDENTIAL, =] EHIJUN 2018/CPE649 Sexe < UNIVERSITI TEKNOLOGI MARA FINAL EXAMINATION COURSE ENVIRONMENTAL ENGINEERING COURSE CODE CPE649 EXAMINATION JUNE 2018 TIME 3 HOURS INSTRUCTIONS TO CANDIDATES 9 This question paper consists of five (5) questions. 2 ‘Answer ALL questions in the Answer Booklet. Start each answer on a new page. 3, Do not bring any material into the examination room unless permission is given by the invigilator. 4, Please check to make sure that this examination pack consists of ’) the Question Paper ii) a two~ page Appendix i) an Answer Booklet — provided by the Faculty 5 ‘Answer ALL questions in English DO NOT TURN THIS PAGE UNTIL YOU ARE TOLD TO DO SO This examination paper consists of & printed pages (© Hak Cipta Universiti Teknologi MARA CONFIDENTIAL,CONFIDENTIAL 2 EHIJUN 2018/CPE649 QUESTION 1 P02, CO2, C6, C1, C3 Generally, rubber glove industry consumes large volume of water for its processes such as leaning the formers and leaching the gloves. Along those processes, water also used in the scrubber system for air pollution control. Eventually, enormous amount of effluent are produced. Table 1 shows the effluent characteristics from a new rubber glove manufacturing company producing 2000m* of effluent daily. Table 1 Parameter Value pH BA | BOD 161 molt coD 500 mg/l ‘Suspended Solids | 300 mg/l [Zine 2.5 ppm a) Using a block diagram, design a suitable process flow of industrial effluent treatment system (IETS) for this company. Specific equipmentiprocess unit must be identified for each process step in your block diagram and provide sufficient explanation, (12 marks) b) Under the Environmental Quality (Industrial Effiuent) Regulation 2009, the effiuent discharge from IETS must be monitored and recorded for inspection by any authorized officers. If the company need to know which parameters need to be monitored, state three (3) sources of information that the company can refer to. (3 marks) ) If a primary clarifier is used in the effluent treatment system, determine its efficiency in removing the SS and BOD. Then, calculate the mass of solids and the volume of sludge removed from the primary clarifier. (Given that the overflow rate is 40m'/m2.d, solids concentration is 5.0%) (5 marks) QUESTION 2 PO2, CO2, C5 a) Delta Palm Oil Mill (OPOM) generates steam for the sterilization of their fresh bunches using the empty fruit bunches (EFB) in their conventional boiler house. When EFB is burned, a part of the ash settles at the bottom of the furnace and the remaining Part is carried out of the furnace with the flue gases (fly ash). In order to comply with the Environmental Quality Clean Air Regulations 2014 requirements, DPOM must install the ir pollution control equipment. The properties of the flue gases are shown in the Table 2. By showing your calculation, select either large cyclone or multiple cyclone is suitable for DPOM operation. © Hak Cipta Universiti Teknologi MARA CONFIDENTIALCONFIDENTIAL, 3 EH/JUN 2018/CPE649 Table 2 Flue Gas Properties _ Cyclone Characteristics ] Flue gas flowrate ams ~~ | Large cyclone diameter | Temperature : 80°C | Density of fly ash particle: 1.5g/cm? Multi cyclone diameter: 30cm Flue gas viscosity : 2.2 x 10°kg/m.s | No of cyclone ina bank : 64 Number of effective tums :5 Fly ash particle diameter: 15um (12 marks) b) “New data reveal a stronger link between both indoor and outdoor air pollution exposure and cardiovascular diseases, such as strokes and heart disease, as well as between air pollution and cancer. This is in addition to air pollution’s role in the development of respiratory diseases, including acute respiratory infections and chronic obstructive pulmonary diseases. The new estimates are not only based on more knowledge about the diseases caused by air pollution, but also upon better assessment of human exposure to air pollutants through the use of improved measurements and technology’ World Health Organization (WHO), 25 March 2014, Geneva. Based on these new findings, recommend four (4) counter measures to tackle air pollution issue in Malaysia. (8 marks) QUESTION 3 PO2, C02, C4, C3 a) Energy recovery from waste is the conversion of non-recyclable waste materials into useable heat and electricity from incineration process. Malaysia's first waste-to-energy facility in Semenyih has the capacity to process approximately 1,100 tons of municipal solid waste (MSW) per day. If the MSW (before recycling) it received having the composition as listed in Table 3, estimate the amount of energy produced (on dry basis) during the incineration process. Table 3 Waste % by mass | Typical moisture, % | Typical energy content, kkg | Food waste 74 70 4,650 7 Paper 24 6 16,750 Plastics 3 2 32,600 Wood L 2 20_ 18,600 (4 marks) b) Major municipal solid waste (MSW) management practice in Malaysia is waste disposal to landfil. Approximately 80-95% of the total MSW collected is sent to the landfills and this method of disposal shortened the landfill life. Based on this issue, suggest six (6) proactive actions to help in lengthening the landfill life to its maximum capacity. (12 marks) (© Hak Cipta Universiti Toknologl MARA CONFIDENTIALCONFIDENTIAL 4 EHIJUN 2018/CPE649 QUESTION 4 PO8, CO3, C2, C3 a) Scheduled wastes means any waste falling within the categories of waste listed in the First Schedule of the Environmental Quality (Scheduled Wastes) Regulations 2005. Scheduled wastes possess some specific characteristics that have potential to adversely affect to the public health and environment. Describe four (4) properties that differentiate scheduled waste with regular solid waste. (8 marks) isted in Table 4 are different types of scheduled waste according to code. Recommend suitable treatment and/or disposal method for each scheduled waste code with sufficient explanation. Table 4 ‘SW CODE ‘SW Descri ‘SW 204 | Sludges containing one or several metals including chromium, copper, nickel, zinc, lead, cadmium, aluminium, tin, vanadium and beryllium ‘SW 206 _ | Spent inorgai SW110_| Electrical and ‘SW 403 | Discarded drugs containing psychotropic substances or containing substances that are toxic, harmful, carcinogenic, mutagenic or teratogenic ‘$W427 | Mineral sludges including calcium hydroxide sludges, phosphating sludges, calcium sulphite sludges and carbonates sludges (10 marks) QUESTION 5 PO8, CO3, C1, C5, C6 a) Define EIA and state its statutory requirements, (4 marks) b) A new coal fired power plant and having the capacity of 250 megawatts is going to be built in Selangor. The schematic diagram of the proposed power plant is in Figure 2. To comply with the Environmental Quality (Prescribed Activities) (Environmental Impact Assessment) Order 2015, the project proponent have to submit the Environmental Impact Assessment (EIA) report to the Department of Environment (DOE). ’) As one of the consultants hired by the project proponent, assess three (3) sources of potential environmental impacts during the operational phase of the power plant. (6 marks) ii) Propose suitable mitigation measures for each source of potential environmental impact assessed in 5bi).
