Since we launched the PointsPlus program, there are a

few questions that we've been asked more than once —
sometimes from brand-new subscribers, other times
from people who’d followed previous Weight Watchers
programs. We've put together a Troubleshooting Guide
to help you solve any niggling problems, but meanwhile,
here's a roundup of the points that are the most worthy
of reiterating.

1. The PointsPlus values calculation is the only way

to track PointsPlus values with Weight Watchers
If you’ve followed a previous Weight Watchers program,
it’s important to know that the PointsPlus program
calculates the PointsPlus values of every food or beverage, taking into account how the
nutrients in food are processed by the body. We use protein, carbohydrate, fat and fiber
numbers to calculate a PointsPlus value. Unlike our previous programs, calories aren't in
the equation because they don't give us a very accurate picture of how much energy is ADVERTISEMENT
available to the body from a food choice. It actually takes calories to digest foods — some
more than others. And it's important to understand that the way PointsPlus values are
calculated helps steer you toward the foods that are the most filling and satisfying; those that
will help ward off hunger.

2. You have your own, unique daily PointsPlus Target

Your daily PointsPlus Target is calculated using a number of factors, and it represents the
minimum number of PointsPlus values you should use each day. If you find you’re
struggling to make it to the minimum, you can get some more tips here. If you find that you
are losing weight too quickly, you may adjust this Target in order to lose at the safe rate of
0.5 to 2 pounds a week. And, if you are dissatisfied with your rate of weight loss and have
tried other adjustments (such as not swapping your earned activity PointsPlus values), you
may also want to look at making small adjustments. Find out more here.

3. You won’t be able to calculate your daily PointsPlus Target yourself

We automatically calculate the number of PointsPlus values you need to eat each day in
order to lose weight — or maintain your loss, if you are at your goal weight. Every time you
log a weight change in your Weight Tracker or at a meeting, your daily PointsPlus Target
will be recalculated to make sure you're eating what you should. You can adjust your Target
once it has been calculated for you.

4. You have a weekly PointsPlus Allowance — use as much of it as you like!

Everyone gets a default of 49 weekly PointsPlus values to use any way you want. Save
them up for a splurge, or use a few at a time every day. It's up to you. Don’t hoard them
away thinking smug thoughts; they’re there for you to enjoy while you lose weight!

5. All fruit, and most vegetables, have zero PointsPlus values

We want you to eat fruits and vegetables, so to make this as easy and flexible as possible,
you don't need to count the PointsPlus values for these items. Consider them prepaid! Our
research has shown the amount a person is likely to eat following this plan, and we've taken
this amount into account in your PointsPlus budget. However, it's important to pay attention
to how satisfied you feel when you eat these zero PointsPlus value foods. They do still
contain calories.

6. Fruit (and vegetables) in recipes contribute toward the PointsPlus values

Just as we've always done with 0 PointsPlus value vegetables, even 0 PointsPlus value
fruits contribute toward the total PointsPlus values of a recipe, whether it's a Weight
Watchers recipe or one you build yourself in the Recipe Builder. Recipes add up the
nutritional info for all their ingredients. If you ate fruit only, save it as a "meal" rather than a
"recipe." If you have more questions about 0 PointsPlus value fruit, here are some more
answers.

7. There are no half PointsPlus values

All PointsPlus values are whole numbers.

8. You can choose to swap activity PointsPlus values before your weekly PointsPlus
Allowance, or not at all
When you go over your daily PointsPlus Target, you can choose whether the overage is
pulled from your weekly PointsPlus Allowance or from the activity PointsPlus values
you’ve earned. You can even even choose to "use or lose" your activity PointsPlus values,
meaning that if you don't swap them on the day you earn them, they won't roll over to the
following day. Just change the settings in your Plan Manager. You can also choose not to
swap them at all if you’d rather. Remember that neither can be rolled over from week to
week.
