CR MO-ALLOYED VACUUM DEGASSED STEELS

Material data sheet edition December 2012 1)

ASTM A 829 - SAE 4140 and ASTM A 829 - SAE 4142 are vacuum degassed fine grained steels which are
particularly used by the customers for heavy machinery applications. The following options can be offered:
ASTM A 829 – SAE 4140 subcritical annealed
ASTM A 829 – SAE 4142 mod subcritical annealed
ASTM A 829 – SAE 4140 mod normalized
ASTM A 829 – SAE 4142 mod normalized + tempered

ASTM A 829 – SAE 4140 consist in the delivery condition (see delivery condition, footnote a) )

Product description
Designation and range of application
ASTM A 829 - SAE 4140 and ASTM A 829 - SAE 4142. are available as plate in form I (rectangular form)
and with the edge categories 3 (sheared edge), 4 (gas cut edge) and 5 (special cut edge) in the following
dimensions:
Thickness > 20 ≤ 130 mm > ¾ ≤ 5 in > 130 ≤ 285 mm > 5 ≤ 11¼ in
a)
Width ≥ 1000 ≤ 3000 mm ≥ 40 ≤ 118 in ≥ 1000 ≤ 2050 mm ≥ 40 ≤ 80½ in
Length ≥ 4500 ≤ 6000 mm ≥ 177½ ≤ 236 in ≥ 4000 ≤ 6000 mm ≥ 157½ ≤ 236 in
a)
Widths < 1250 mm (49 in) have to be ordered with an even number of plates
Other dimensions available upon request.

Possible delivery conditions are annealed (subcritical annealing), normalized for ASTM A 829 - SAE 4140
and normalized + tempered for ASTM A 829 - SAE 4142. The delivery condition is to be agreed.
a)
control rolling (normalizing rolling) may replace furnace normalizing
The plates are not delivered in the as rolled (AR) condition.
If deviating tensile or hardness requirements are specified, they must be compatible with the chemical
analysis, the delivery condition and the thickness.
The hardness values will be converted to tensile strength values in accordance with ASTM A 370.

Testing
* Heat analysis
* Dimension control
* Surface inspection
* HBW - Hardness (tested on surface of one plate for each thickness and heat)
* Tensile testing (of one plate for each thickness and heat) can be specified
Unless otherwise agreed, the results are documented in an inspection certificate 3.1 in accordance with
EN 10204.

Identification of plates
Unless otherwise agreed the marking is carried out via steel stamps with at least the following information:
* steel grade
* heat number
* number of mother plate and individual plate
* the manufacturer’s symbol
* inspector’s sign

General technical delivery requirements

Unless otherwise agreed, the general technical delivery requirements in accordance with ISO 404 apply.

Tolerances
Unless otherwise agreed, tolerances are in accordance with ASTM A 6 with the following restrictions:
plate thickness: in accordance with ASTM A 6
plate width: ≥ 1000 mm ≤ 1500 mm ± 25 mm ≥ 40 ≤ 59 in ± 1 in
> 1500 mm ≤ 2050 mm ± 40 mm > 59 ≤ 80½ in ± 1½ in
> 2050 mm ± 50 mm > 80½ in ± 2 in
plate length: ± 1000 mm ± 40 in
flatness: in accordance with ASTM A6
Unless otherwise agreed, short lengths ≥ 2 m (79 in) are part of the delivery.

2/3 ASTM A 829 – SAE 4140, ASTM A 829 – SAE 4142 mod.
Surface quality
Unless otherwise agreed, the specifications will be in accordance with EN 10163-2 class A, subclass 3.
Shot blasting of upper and lower surface of the plate and shop priming are possible on request.

Options
Option 1
Ultrasonic testing: Ultrasonic testing in accordance with ASTM A578, Level B.

Option 2
Tolerances: Flatness 3 mm/m (1/8 in/40 in), evaluation according to EN 10029.

General note
If special requirements, which are not listed in this material data sheet are to be met by the steel due to its
