Module 1, Assignment 1 WHO ICF Model

The document discusses three case studies involving children with hearing loss. The first case involves a child named Aaron who has speech production errors and may benefit from communication strategies like repetition or clarification. The second case discusses a child who has difficulty understanding speech even in quiet and may need his cochlear implant calibrated for high frequencies. The third case is about a patient named Mr. B who experiences vertigo and communication breakdowns and could use strategies like describing or using associations to find words.

1. Why do you believe this child has speech production errors?

The client is understood when speaking with family members but not teachers and peers.

2. What are three communication strategies that Aaron could use when he experiences communication
breakdowns with his peers?

Repetition (repeat): Repeat at a slower rate; Repeat spoken more clearly; Repeat louder; Emphasize key
words. Politely ask to repeat what was said – more loudly, clearly and/or slowly.
Revision (change form): Break into two sentences; Different words, same meaning; Different form (word order)
Addition (add information): Add just a little information; Define terms; Add background context. Clarifying
addition skills are most reliant on linguistic skills and are the most sophisticated strategies. Add a word or a bit of
information along with what you originally said. Provide some background information to what he said to help
explain your message.

3. What type of hearing assistive technology might help Aaron in the classroom?

FM/digital wireless and audio distribution systems

1. Why does this child have difficulty understanding speech, even in a quiet environment?

If the client’s implant is not calibrated for high-frequency hearing loss, they may experience problems
understanding speech even in a relatively quiet environment.

2. How can this child with profound hearing loss have speech skills that are within normal limits?

Client was diagnosed at 1 month and implanted at 12 months and wears bilateral cochlear implants consistently.

3. What are two ways that he could work on self-advocacy?

Client can take care of his own assistive technology needs (FM, batteries, captioning), take responsibility for
completing daily assignments and projects, keep track of assignments and materials, keep track of schedule and
manages time independently and attempt to follow directions without assistance.

1. What is Benign paroxysmal positional vertigo (BPPV)?

Benign paroxysmal positional vertigo, or BPPV, is an inner ear disorder. It is the most common cause of vertigo and
occurs when the otoconia come loose from the utricle and flow into the semicircular canals, disrupting balance and
causing dizziness.

2. What are three communication strategies that Mr. B could use when he experiences communication
breakdowns?

Delay: Be patient and take time to find word.

Describe: Give the listener information about what the thing looks like or does.
Association: Us words related to the word patient is attempting to find.

3. What are two other recommendations that you have to address Mr. B's personal issues?

Increase social interaction (search for and recommend senior activities in patient’s area or recommend group
treatment), physical therapy to increase independence and psychological counseling to treat depression.
