Introduction: The School’s Garden is looking unloved and uncared for and it

needs to be alive and well to grow us food for us to use in our kitchen garden
program. It is now our job as the year 6’s and leaders of the school to bring it
back to life. The class is going to split up into 5 groups and we are going to
research, plan, design and then implement a solution to create an awesome
garden that we can use in our kitchen garden program to make delicious food.
Lessons:
The first lesson will be on researching what we need to do as a class to look
after a garden that is used to produce food in a way which is healthy and
sustainable. While keeping in mind of allergies, such as nuts, and other
problems that might arise.
The second lesson will be looking into what plants the class is going to grow to
use in our kitchen garden program. Such as what plants are in season and what
is easy/good plants to use in a school garden. Students will also be given the
opportunity to research about indigenous plant foods.
The third lesson will be students going down to where the students will set up
the kitchen garden and figure out how much room they have. If the students feel
like they need more space, this will also be an opportunity to figure out how
they can incorporate more space for the garden.
The fourth lesson will have the students (in their groups of 5) presenting their
research and their proposal for the class/school and the teacher and the students
decide on which group proposal to follow through with.
The fifth lesson will be the start of implementing the proposal by getting started
with the garden making sure it is suitable and ready for the seedlings of the
plants the students want to grow. This includes testing the soil and using
materials given (such as tires, to create a new place to grow plants).
The sixth and last lesson will be planting the seedling and organising the
scheduling for the class to look after the garden that was in line with the
proposal made by the students. This includes keeping records of changes and
who waters and cares for the plants on what days.

Evaluation: Students will be evaluated on their presentation and their group

work. Students will be expected to work well within their groups and be able to
share out the work.
Students will also need to have ideas about the garden that are backed up by
good research, such as plants that are in season and correct plans on how to look
after the plants they have chosen.

Time: the time required for this design brief is six sixty-minute lessons.
However, lessons 1,5 and 6 might need a second lesson if the students struggle
to complete it within the allocated time.
