contexts?

SPEECH CONTEXT refers to the situation or environment and the circumstances in which communication
occurs.

Activity:

ACT IT OUT!

Work in groups of eight and read the following scenes.

Scene 1: Someone making an announcement to the public.

Scene 2: Two small groups of people discussing something separately

Scene 3: One person talking to himself

Scene 4: Two people speaking with each other on thephone

Scene 5: A reporter appearing live on screen.


Weave the scenes together into a story. You are free to interchange the order of the scenes.

•Act out your story and present it to the class within five minutes.

Discuss in three minutes what information can be contained in each of the following types of
communication. Fill in each box with the information needed.

What is Intrapersonal Communication?

It is simply communicating with oneself.


It takes place when the “self” is engaging in inner talk or internal discourse.
Intrapersonal communication is essential to understanding yourself an dothers.

INTRAPERSONAL – A type of communication that centers on one person where the speakers acts both
as the sender and the receiver.

“The message is made up of your thoughts and feelings.

The cahnnel is your brain which processes what you are thinking and feeling. There is feedback in the
sense that as you talk to yourself, you discard certain ideas and replace them with others.” (Hybels and
Weaver, 2012,p.16)

SAMPLES:

You spent the night thinking and analyzing why a student from the other class talked to you on the way
home and you decided it probably meant nothing.

You felt happy while thinking about how your teacher appreciate you for submitting your project before
due date and you reflected on why this was so.
INTERPERSONAL – A type of communication between and among people and establishes personal
relationship

According to Solomon and Theiss, 2013:

“inter”- highlights how interpersonal communication connects people

“Personal” – unique qualities as a person matter during interpersonal communication

TYPES OF INTERPERSONAL CONTEXT

Dyad Communication – Occurs between two people


SAMPLE: You offer feedback on a speech performance of your classmate.

You provided comfort to a friend who was feeling down.

SMALL GROUP – Involves at least three but not more tha tweleve people engaging in a face to face
interaction to achieve desired goal

All participants can freely share their ideas in a loose and open discussion
SAMPLE:

You ar participating in an organizational meeting which aims to address the concerns of you students.

You are having a discussion with your group mates on how to finish the assigned task given

3. PUBLIC -Requires you to deliver message in front of the group

Message canbe driven by informational or persuasive purposes

The channels are more exaggerated, voice is louder, gestures are more expansive due to bigger
audience. Powerpoint can be used.” – Hybels and Weaver, 2012
Sample:

You deliver a graduation speech to your batch

You participate in a declamation, oratorical contest or debate watched by many people.

4. MASS COMMUNICATION

Communication takes place through television, radio, newspapers, magazines, books, billboards,
internet and other types of media.
SAMPLE :

You are a student journalist articulating your stand on current issues through the school newspaper.

SPEECH STYLE • The content dictates and affects the way people communicate, which results in various
speech styles! • According to Joos (1968), there are five speech styles! These are intimate, casual,
consultative, formal, and frozen • Each style dictates what appropriate language or vocabulary should
be used or observed!

13. INTIMATE • This style is private, which occurs between or among close family members or
individuals. • The language used in this style may not be shared in public.

14. CASUAL • This style is common among peers and friends

• Jargon, slang, or the vernacular language are used

15. CONSULTATIVE • This style is the standard one.

• Professional or mutually acceptable language is a must in this style. Examples of situations are
communication between teachers and students, employers and employees, doctor and patient, judge
and lawyer or President

16. FORMAL • This style is used in formal settings.

• Unlike the consultative style, this is one way.

• Examples are sermons of priests and ministers, State of the Nation Address of the President

17. FROZEN • This style is "frozen" in time and remains unchanged.


• It mostly occurs in ceremonies. Common examples are the Preamble to the Constitution, Lord’s
Prayer, and Allegiance to country or flag.
