Homework 2 0

This document contains 5 homework problems for a Strength of Materials course regarding normal strain, stress, and material properties. Problem 1 asks to determine average normal strain in diagonals of a rectangular plastic piece. Problem 2 asks to determine normal strain in a cable connecting an airplane control linkage when the linkage rotates. Problem 3 asks to determine stretch in an A-36 steel guy wire supporting a distributed load on a strut. Problem 4 asks to determine strain in wires connecting a weight to rigid bars when the weight causes displacement. Problem 5 asks to determine the angle of tilt of a beam supported by a strut and post when a load is applied, given stress-strain properties of the polyester resin material.

Homework 2

Strength of Materials

Spring 2017

Name: Student ID No.:

1. The piece of plastic is originally rectangular. Determine the average normal strain that occurs
along the diagonals AC and DB.

2. Part of a control linkage for an airplane consists of a rigid member CBD and a flexible cable
AB. If a force is applied to the end D of the member and causes it to rotate by θ = 0.3°,
determine the normal strain in the cable. Originally the cable is unstretched.
3. The strut is supported by a pin at C and an A-36 steel guy wire AB. If the wire has a diameter
of 5 mm, determine how much it stretches when the distributed load acts on the strut.

4. The bar DA is rigid and is originally held in the horizontal position when the weight W is
supported from C. If the weight causes B to be displaced downward 0.625 mm, determine the
strain in wires DE and BC. Also, if the wires are made of A-36 steel and have a cross-
sectional area of 1.25 mm2, determine the weight W.
5. The stress–strain diagram for a polyester resin is given in the figure. If the rigid beam is
supported by a strut AB and post CD, both made from this material, and subjected to a load of
P=80 kN, determine the angle of tilt of the beam when the load is applied. The diameter of
the strut is 40 mm and the diameter of the post is 80 mm.
