Boot from SAN – Creating Windows 2003 Boot Volume

This documentation will cover the following:


- Disabling the internal SCSI on the server
- Setting the Qlogic settings for booting from the SAN
- Creating a server within the Compellent GUI
- Creating the boot volume on the SAN and assigning to the server
- Installing Windows 2003.

Prior to installing, please have the following media available:


- Windows 2003 installation CD
- Diskette with the Qlogic drivers

Server BIOS configuration settings

1) Boot prospective server


2) Enter the BIOS settings on the server.
3) Disable internal SCSI boot drive, and make sure the HBA boots first.
4) Save settings and reboot server.

Qlogic BIOS configuration settings

1) During boot, CTRL-Q at the QLogic information to enter QLogic BIOS configuration.
2) Reset the HBA to factory defaults
a. Select - Configuration Settings
b. Select - Restore Default Settings
c. Press - ESC
d. Select - Save Changes
e. Select - Exit Fast!UTIL
f. Select - Reboot System
3) During boot, CTRL-Q at the QLogic information to enter QLogic BIOS configuration.
4) Change the adapter settings to Compellent recommended:
a. Select – Configuration Settings
b. Select – Adapter Settings
c. Change the Following in RED:

BIOS Address: CB000


BIOS Revision: 1.43
Adapter Serial Number: S99999
Interrupt Level: 5
Adapter Port Name: 21XXXXXXXXXXXXXX (*Record for later)
Host Adapter BIOS: ENABLED (Default: Disabled)
Frame Size: 2048
Loop Reset Delay: 5
Adapter Hard Loop ID: Disabled
Hard Loop ID: 0
Spinup Delay: Disabled
Connection Options: 1 (Default: 2)
Fiber Channel Tape Support: Enabled
Data Rate: 2

d. Press – ESC
e. Select – Advanced Adapter Settings
f. Change the following settings in RED:

Execution Throttle: 256 (Default: 16)


Luns Per Target: 256 (or as appropriate) (Default: 128)
Enable LIP Reset: Yes (Default: No)
Enable LIP Full Login: Yes
Enable Target Reset: Yes
Login Retry Count: 60 (Default: 8)
Port Down Retry Count: 60 (Default: 30)
Link Down Timeout: 30
Extended Error Logging: Disabled
Operation Mode: 0
Interrupt Delay Timer: 0

g. Press – ESC
h. Select – Selectable Boot Settings
i. Change the following settings:

Selectable Boot: Enabled


(Primary) Boot port name, Lun: 0000000000000000, 0

*** Leave the boot port name 0’s for now. You may have to select it later after configuring the ports in the
Compellent GUI.

j. Press – ESC, ESC


k. Select – Save Changes

5) If you have more than one HBA you must change the settings on them as well:
a. Select – Select Host Adapter
b. Select the next adapter and repeat steps above.

6) Select – Exit Fast!UTIL


7) Select – Reboot System

8) Leave the system at this point of the QLogic configuration and proceed to Storage Center.

Compellent Storage Center GUI Management

At the Storage Center management interface:


1) Create a server
2) Select the WWN of the two ports that were recorded previously.
3) Create the boot volume for the server and map the boot volume to the new server.
i. **** Note that the LUN 0 must be the respective LUN # to boot server.
4) Map the volume to the respective server.
5) Select the server and verify that each WWN is listed and the volume that was mapped
is in an “Up” state.

All is done from the Compellent perspective.

6) Go back into the QLogic BIOS on the server


i. If the Volume is not visible to the server, you may have to return to the selectable
boot settings and select a Front End Compellent Port. (See # 4 Step H above)
7) Save QLogic BIOS settings and reboot server.
Installation of Windows 2003 OS to SAN

1) Insert Windows CD to begin the installation process.


2) During first prompt on bottom of Windows installation, press F6 for additional drivers.
a. Insert Qlogic driver diskette
b. Continue on with prompts
3) Once completed, remove diskette and CD prior to system reset.
4) Installation completed.
