The document contains 6 homework problems involving determining stresses and dimensions of shafts:
1) Calculate shear stresses in a shaft supported by journal and thrust bearings
2) Find the inner diameter of a steel tube transmitting power at a given speed and stress limit
3) Determine minimum inner and outer diameters of a shaft connecting a motor and speed reducer given power, rpm, and stress limit
4) Calculate the length needed for a brass shaft to have zero twist from two applied torques
5) Determine the angle of twist in a steel shaft assembly supported by bearings and subjected to torques

Homework 3:
1. The 150-mm-diameter shaft is supported by a
smooth journal bearing at E and a smooth thrust bearing at F. Determine the maximum shear stress developed in each segment of the shaft. 2. A steel tube having an outer diameter of 2.5 in. is used to transmit 9 hp when turning at 27 rev min. Determine the inner diameter d of the tube to the nearest 1/8 in. if the allowable shear stress is τallow = 10 ksi. 3. The motor M is connected to the speed reducer C by the tubular shaft and coupling. If the motor supplies 20 hp and rotates the shaft at a rate of 600 rpm, determine the minimum inner and outer diameters and of the shaft if di/do = 0.75. The shaft is made from a material having an allowable shear stress of τallow = 12 ksi. 4. If the shaft is made of red brass C83400 copper and is subjected to torques T1 = 20 kN-m and T2 = 50 kN-m, determine the distance L so that the angle of twist at end A is zero. 5. The two shafts are made of A992 steel. Each has a diameter of 1 in., and they are supported by bearings at A,B, and C, which allow free rotation. If the support at D is fixed, determine the angle of twist of end B when the torques are applied to the assembly as shown. 6. The A992 steel shaft has a diameter of 60 mm and is fixed at its ends A and B. If it is subjected to the torques shown, determine the absolute maximum shear stress in the shaft.
TA + TB = 700 equation (1)
φ A/B = φ A/ C + φC / D + φD / B = 0
TA (1) (TA − 500 )(1.5 ) TB (1)
0= + − GJ GJ GJ
3.5TA − TB = 750 equation (2)
Solving, TA = 414.3 N-m, TB = 285.7 N-m , TCD = TA – 500 = -85.7 (85.7 N-m CW)
