TUTORIAL 1
1. By using method of joints, determine the force in each member of the truss shown in Figure 1 and state
whether the members are in tension or compression.

Figure Q1

2. Use method of sections to determine the force in members BC, CD, HC, HG, CG and CF of the truss
shown in Figure Q2 and state whether these members are in tension or compression.

Q1 Hibbeler 12-86
When a rocket reaches an altitude of 40 m it begins to travel along the parabolic path (y − 40)2 = 160x,
where the coordinates are measured in meters. If the component of the velocity in the vertical direction
is constant at vy = 180 m/s, determine the magnitudes of the rocket’s velocity and acceleration when it
reaches an altitude of 80 m.

Q2 Hibbeler Problems 12-116 (14 edition)

When the car reaches point A, it has a speed of 25 m/s. If the brakes are applied, its speed is reduced by
at = (0.001s − 1) m/s2. Determine the magnitude of acceleration of the car just before it reaches point C.

Q3 Hibbeler Problems 12-182
A cameramen standing at A in following the movement of a race ar , B, which is travelling around
curved track at a constant speed of 30 m/s. Determine the angular rate θ˙ at which the man must turn
in order to keep the camera directed on the car at the instant θ = 30◦.

Q4 Hibbeler Problems 12-186

The peg P is constrained to move in the slots of the fixed slot BC and rotating bar OA. When θ = 30◦ the
angular velocity and angular acceleration of arm OA are θ˙ = 2 rad/s and θ¨ = 3 rad/s2, respectively.
Determine the magnitudes of the velocity and acceleration of the peg P at this instant.
