This document contains 6 questions about using statistical concepts like standard deviation, Chebyshev's theorem, and the empirical rule to analyze data and make inferences. Question 1 asks to use Chebyshev's theorem to determine an interval containing at least 810 scores from a sample of 1080 students with a mean IQ of 120 and standard deviation of 8. Question 2 provides typing test scores and asks which job a recent applicant seems best suited for based on being closest to the mean. Question 3 asks to use Chebyshev's theorem to determine the percentage of times a coffee brewing time will fall within given intervals.

1.

If the IQs of a random sample of 1080 students at a large university have a mean
score of 120 and a standard deviation of 8, use Chebyshev’s theorem to determine
the interval containing at least 810 of the IQs in the sample. From this interval draw
a statistical inference concerning the IQs of all students at this university. In what
range can we be sure that no more than 120 of the scores fall?

2. Different typing skills are required for secretaries depending on whether one is
working in a law office, an accounting firm, or for a research mathematical group
at a major university. In order to evaluate candidates for these positions, an
employment agency administers three distinct standardized typing samples. A
time penalty has been incorporated into the scoring of each sample based on the
number of typing errors. The mean and standard deviation for each test, together
with the score achieved by a recent applicant are given in the table below.

Sample Applicant’s Score Mean Standard Deviation

Law 141 sec 180 sec 30 sec
Accounting 7 min 10 min 2 min
Research 33 min 26 min 5 min
For what type of position does this applicant seem to be best suited?

3. A coffee-maker is regulated so that it takes an average of 5.8 minutes to brew a

cup Chebyshev’s theorem, what percentage of the times that this coffee-maker is
used will be brewing time take anywhere from
a. 4.6 minutes to 7.0 minutes
b. 3.4 minutes to 8.2 minutes
c. 4.3 minutes to 7.3 minutes

4. An automobile salesman made a profit of $245 on a subcompact model for which

the average profit has been $200 with standard deviation of $50. Later on the same
day he made a profit of $260 on a large luxury model for which the average profit
has been $500 with a standard deviation of $150. For which of these two models
is the salesman’s profit relatively higher?

5. A company pays its 1000 employee an average hourly wage of $6.25 with a
standard deviation of $60 cents. Assuming the population of wages to be
approximately bell-shaped, use the Empirical Rule to describe the variability of the
data.
6. A pharmaceutical store delivers an average of 40 prescription-filled orders a day,
with a standard deviation of 8 orders. Assuming a bell-shaped population for the
daily number of prescription delivered, what percentage of the time will the driver
make
a. Between 24 to 56 deliveries
b. Fewer than 32 deliveries?
