Assignment 1a (Monsoon 2019) - 2
1. A light cable from a Jeep is tied to the peak of an A-frame and exerts a force of 450N along the
cable (Figure 1). A 1000kg log is suspended from a second cable, which is fastened to the peak.
What is the total force from the cables on the A frame?

2. Find the total force and its direction from the cable acting on each of the three pulleys, each of
which is free to turn (Figure 2). The 100N weight is stationary.
3. Two soccer players approach a stationary ball 10ft away from the goal. Simultaneously, a player
on team O (Offense) kicks the ball with force 100lb for a split second while a player on team D
(Defence) kick with force 70lb during the same time interval (Figure 3). Does the offense score
(assuming that the goalie is asleep)?

4. Two tugboats are manoeuvring an ocean liner. The desired total force is 3000lb at an angle of 15°
as shown in the diagram. If the tugboat forces have directions as shown, what must the forces F1
and F2 be?
5. What is the orthogonal total force component in the x direction of the force transmitted to pin A
of a roof truss by the four members (Figure 5)? What is the total component in the y direction?
Figure 5 Figure 6
6. A block A is constrained to move along a 20° incline in the yz plane as shown in Figure 6. How
far does the block have to move if the force F is to do 10ft-lb of work?
7. The cable BC carries a tension of 750 N (Figure 7). Write this tension as a force T acting on point
B in terms of the unit vectors i, j, and k. The elbow at A forms a right angle.

8. In the design of the robot to insert the small cylindrical part into a close-fitting circular hole, the
robot arm must exert a 90-N force P on the part parallel to the axis of the hole as shown in the
Figure 8. Determine the components of the force which the part exerts on the robot along axes (a)
parallel and perpendicular to the arm AB, and (b) parallel and perpendicular to the arm BC.
9. The t-component of the force F is known to be 75N. Determine the n-component and the
magnitude of F (Figure 9).
10. The guy cables AB and AC are attached to the top of the transmission tower as shown in Figure
10. The tension in cable AC is 8kN. Determine the required tension T in cable AB such that the
net effect of the two cable tensions is a downward force at point A. Determine the magnitude R of
this downward force.

11. Two football players are pushing a blocking dummy. Player A pushes with 100lb force while
Player B pushes with 150lb force towards bow C of the dummy. What is the total force exerted
on the dummy by the players? Refer Figure 11.
Figure 11 Figure 12
12. Determine the projection of force acting along line AC of the pipe assembly (Figure 12). Express
the result as a Cartesian vector.
13. What is the sum of the forces transmitted by the structural rods to the pin at A?
14. Using the parallelogram law, find the tensile force in cable AC (TAC) and the angle α.
15. Determine the magnitude of the resultant force FR=F1+F2 and its direction, measured counter
clockwise from the positive x axis.
16. The vertical force F acts downwards at A on the two membered frame. Determine the
magnitude of the two components of F directed along the axes of AB and AC. Set F=350N.
17. If F1=F2=300N determine the angles ϴ and Φ so that the resultant force is directed along the
positive x axis and has a magnitude of FR=200N
18. Determine the magnitude and coordinate direction angles of the force F acting on the stake.
19. The stock mounted on the lathe is subjected to a force of 60N. Determine the coordinate
direction angle and express the force as a Cartesian vector.
20. The beam is subjected to the two forces shown. Express each force in Cartesian vector form and
determines the magnitude and coordinate direction angles of the resultant force.
21. Express the position vector r in the Cartesian vector form; then determine its magnitude and
coordinate direction angles.
22. Express force F as a Cartesian vector; then determines its coordinate direction angles.
23. The guy wires are used to support the telephone pole. Represent the force in each wire in
Cartesian vector form.
24. Determine the projected component of the force FAB = 560N acting along cable AC. Express the
result as a Cartesian vector.
