Assignment Question 3

This document provides instructions for a group assignment on spillway and reservoir design for a civil and water engineering course. It includes two questions - the first asks students to analyze hydraulic properties of a spillway stilling basin and explain factors affecting dam design floods. The second asks students to calculate the half-life of a reservoir given sediment inflow properties and use monthly inflow/demand data to estimate required reservoir storage volume.

Hydraulic Design II: TCW 5201

GROUP ASSIGNMENT: SPILLWAYS AND RESERVOIR DESIGN

INSTRUCTIONS
ANSWER ALL QUESTIONS Due Date: 11 MAY 2018 (17:00HRS)

QUESTION 1
a. A spillway carries a discharge of 22.5m3 /s with the outlet velocity of 15 m/s at depth of
0.2m. Select an adequate U.S.B.R stilling basin and determine the sequent depth, the
length of the hydraulic jump and the energy loss. [15 marks]

b. Explain the importance of reservoir flood routing in spillway design. [5 marks]

c. List and explain the factors that affect the design flood selected in dam design?
[5 marks]

QUESTION 2
The inflow to reservoir has an average sediment concentration of 800ppm. If the volume of the
reservoir is 100 x 106 m3 and the annual flow of the river is 900 x106 m3, determine the
approximate ‘half-life’ of the reservoir. Assume that average porosity of the settled sediment
over this period is 0.4. [15 marks]
During a critical 24- month period, the average monthly inflows to a reservoir and the average
water demand are given in the following table:
Month Average Average Month Average Average Month Average Average
inflow demand inflow demand inflow demand

Use the data to estimate the required storage volume of the reservoir. [10 marks]
