This section gives the definitions related to the repair categories for damage tolerant structures as applicable. 2. Repairs Classification ‘A. There are two categories of repairs in this manual. These categories and the types of damage tolerant repairs are defined as follows: oy 2) Permanent repair: It is a type of repair valid for the entire economical life of the aircraft with no further action required, except for eventual repair inspections (some repairs may require additional recurrent inspections). Temporary repair: It is a type of repair valid for a limited period, usually given in FC. Additional recurrent inspections may be necessary during the fepair validity and a final action (repair, part replacement, ete) is required. B. The terms used in this section are defined as follows: O) ) 6) 4 6) (6) Damage tolerance: it Is the. ablity of the structure to sustain anticipated loads in the presence of damage unti itis detected through inspection or malfunction and repaired. Damage tolerant repair: Its a repair that meets the necessary damage tolerance conditions. Repeat intervals: Its the period in FC that occurs between the necessary inspections, Supplemental inspections: Those additional inspections required for a repaired structure not defined in the aircraft maintenance program. Threshold: It is the period in FC since the time of first entry into service unti the first required supplemental inspection. ‘Time limit: It is the maximum period in FC that is permitted until itis necessary to replace or rework a temporary repair. The aircraft structure is divided into primary and secondary ones, defined as follows: + Primary structure is the one that significantly contributes to the carying of flight, ground or Pressurization loads. Itis also known as a structural significant item (SSI) + Secondary structure is the one that carries only air or inertial loads. Every component that is. not mentioned in the tables below is considered a secondary structure. 2. Approval of Repairs A. All repairs to the structure must be made in accordance with data acceptable to the operator's = airworthiness authorities, . B. Acceptable data may include: + Structural Repair Manual (SRM); + Embraer-approved repair drawing or repair instruction; + Airline-ceveloped data approved by Embraer; + Airline-developed data. C. Inthe case of repairs to the primary structure beyond the SRM-defined limits, Embraer approval is advisable. D. Embraer can assist in providing the necessary data for repairs in any of the above cases. 3. Primary Structures x Principal Structural Elements ‘A. Allstructural items listed in item 4 are considered Principal Structural Element (PSE). NOTE: Principal Structural Elements (PSE) are those elements of the primary structure which contribute significantly to the carrying of fight, ground, or pressurization loads, and whose integrity is essential in maintaining the overall structural integrity of the airplane. 4, Primary Struct tion ‘A. EMBRAER 190 sTRUCTURAL REPAIR MANUAL, {8) Gouge - A gouge is 2 damaged area of any size, which results in a cross-sectional area change. It is usually caused by contact with a relatively sharp object which produces a continuous, sharp, or smooth channel-ike groove in the material. (8) Hole ~A perforation of the surface that is fully surrounded by undamaged material (10) Nick - & nick is @ local gouge with sharp edges. Consider a series of nicks, in a line pattern, tobe the equivalent of a gouge. (11) Puncture - A puncture is a damage that goes fully through a part thickness and does not have regular shape. It can be caused by hitting on a part with a sharp object. (12) Scratch - A scratch is a line of damage of any depth in the material that results in a cross- sectional area change. It is usually caused by contact with a very sharp object. ©. The types of damage that occur on the aircraft composite parts are shown in SRM PART Ii 51-70-01, D. The damages above are classified in the following categories: (1) Allowable Damage: (a) Allowable damage is defined as a damage which does nol compromise the structural integrity or decrease the function of a component. Allowable damage data is intended to permit an operator to ascertain whether a damaged airplane may be returned into =! service without service or not. This kind of allowable damage must have no significant effect on the. strength or fatigue life of the structure, which must sill be capable of * fultiling its designed function. Allowable damage may be contingent upon minimal rework, such as cleanup or plugging a hole. Damage which can be permitted to exist as itis or which may be corrected by a simple procedure. 8 (b) Although no structural repair is necessary, it does not mean that no action has to be taken. Minor rework, such as blend-out or restoration of protective treatment is generally required. (6) Assess the damage to the structural element by using the information in pageblock 1 in the appropriate chapter, section and subject of this manual. Check for allowable damage, according to procedures described in the allowable damage evaluation process flowchart, shown in Figure 1. In case of a lightning stike damage, refer to Figure 2, (8) There are two types of allowable damage, as follows: 1 Permanent Allowable Damage - This damage does not require a structural repair or additional inspections during the design service goal of the aircraft. 2. Temporary Allowable Damage (Fly-by) - This is a time limited damage, usually given in FC, that must be permanently repaired after this period, Additional inspections must be done during the fly-by period (e) The extent of allowable damage for each structural member or assembly is the subject, of each respective chapter in pageblock 1. fs pusieation: 408 3 {f) Inthe SRM allowable damage sections, the damages limits are stated as: : 1. Thickness Reduction Damage -Althe damage which rests inane decrease in i the original hickness and, consequent, the cross section.
