Basketball Skills Progression, ages 6 – 10, grades K – 4

Overview

 Use hoops that are age appropriate, 8 years old = 8 feet hoop, for our 3rd and 4th grade
league, they play on 10 foot rims.
 60 minutes maximum time per session.
 Multiple coaches with small stations, ideal 1 coach per basket, 3-4 kids per basket.
 Head coach introducing each skill, then coach at each basket working with players
 Make sure drills are 5-8 minutes in length at most, and each player gets as many reps as
possible. Goal is to keep things moving and not do one drill for 15 minutes.
 Try to limit the amount of talking as possible. Teach fast, get kids reps
 Try to make sure each kid has a ball.
 I use parts of each one of these drills depending on age and skill level.
 I try to use parts of each section, but not all of them. Early on I focus on lower level, then
progress to more advanced work. My 4th grade team can handle all of these drills by the
end of the season.

Stationary ball handling – 1 ball.

 Ball slaps
 On fingers, arms extended
 Around head, waist, legs, figure 8
 Right hand dribble pounds
 Left hand dribble pounds
 Introduce Cross over, between legs
 Introduce 2 ball dribbling – see if you get 5 in a row.

Ball handling on the move – cones and without cones.

 Have them run through the cones without a ball, and time them.
 Have them go through cones and back with ball, time them.
 Create games, or time each kid, or have relay races
 Stockton / Hurley dribbling No cones: Have players start at baseline and dribble to 3 point line
and back with right hand, left hand. forward, backwards, and side ways.

Ball handling – Jump stops and pivots

 Ball and partner, dribble, pivot, and pass drill. Start at baseline, dribble to foul line, jump stop,
pivot, and pass to partner. Work on proper jumpstops, front and reverse pivot, chest and
bounce pass
 Ex: right hand dribble, right foot, front pivot, chest pass
 Left hand dribble, left foot, front pivot, bounce pass

Triple threat / Jump stop / rip through / Jab steps SERIES

 JUMP STOP and TRIPLE THREAT: Have kids start on baseline, and flip ball out to themselves
catching it at free throw line. Player runs and jumpstop. On catch ball goes on LEFT HIP for right
hand player. Each kid does 5 – 10 catches working on good jump stops, and putting ball on the
hip
 RIP THROUGHS: Flip, jumpstop, catch, and RIP THROUGH below the knee. Each player then
takes 2-3 dribble after rip through
 CROSSOVER STEP: Flip, jumpstop, catch, and makes a Cross over step driving left. Each player
then takes 2-3 dribble after cross over
 JAB step - : Flip, jumpstop, catch, and player makes a jab step with right foot. Jab step and go,
with 2 explosion dribbles
 Rocker step. Flip, jumpstop, catch, and player makes a jab step with right foot. Jab step , shot
fake, and go.

Shooting Form– without ball

1. The turn, sweep and sway:

 Introduce the turn, hop, sweep and sway without a ball.
 All stand on 3 point line without a ball, jump and turn in midair. Turn 90 degrees
 Pt .2 jump and turn 90, and jump forward
 Pt 3. Jump, turn and shoot without a ball.

2. Follow through and release

 Discuss proper follow through.
 Arms extended, elbow locked out
 elbow, hip alignment,
 1 or 2 finger release
 Guide hand – “framing” ball, or touching forearm on release

Shooting Form– with ball

1. Side of backboard shooting – goal is to shoot and hit the side of the back board, and have ball
come straight back to you. A line on each side of basket. Each kid shoots 2 in a row then
rotates.
2. Front of rim bank shots – 1 step in front of rim, bank shots. Focus on release, turn and
alignment, follow through, and rotation of ball. “finger through the rim” high bank shots
3. 1 dribble pull ups – Right hand. Start at FT line, 1 right dribble, pull up, swish. Work on hop,
pound dribble into shot pocket
4. 1 dribble pull up – Left hand. Start at FT line, 1 right dribble, pull up, swish. Work on hop, pound
dribble into shot pocket
5. Start in left corner. 1 dribble pull up with right hand to left block, bank shot. . Work on hop,
pound dribble into shot pocket
6. Start in right corner. 1 dribble pull up with left hand to Right block, bank shot. . Work on hop,
pound dribble into shot pocket
7. Do some type of shooting game. First to 5 or 10

Layups Form fundamentals progression – Explosion layups (layups off 1 foot)

1. High 5 drill: Proper footwork without a ball, line up at elbow. Coach stand on right block with
right hand in the air. Each kid runs and give coach a high 5 with right hand, jumping off left foot
2. After 4-5 reps with out a ball, have coach stand at block with a ball in hand. Kid runs from
elbow, takes ball out of coach hands, and shoots right layup
3. Pt 3. Start at elbow, 1-2 dribble strong hand layups.
4. Pt 4. Coach has ball on wing, player starts at 3 point line, coach makes bounce pass for layup.
Shooting and catching on move.
5. Have some type of game
6. Repeat drills for weak hand.

Layup progression – Power layups (layups off 2 feet)

1. start at elbow, 1-2 dribbles, strong jump stop inside paint, and bank shot.
2. Work both sides right and left, move lines back
3. Coach makes bounce pass and player catches, and shoots power layup

Offense fundamentals - Cuts Progression

 Introduce V cut. Start at block, step in and cut to 3 point line. Catch and face, triple threat,
get ball on left hip. Each Side. 1 on 0, no defense
 1 on 1 - have player face guard. offense must v cut to get open, catch and face, strong with
ball
 Backdoor Cut: 1 on 0. Player v cuts to 3 point line, is denied, makes "swim move", calls for
the ball, and cuts backdoor. Finish with layup. Each side of floor
 Backdoor cut: 1 on 1. coach is passer. player v cuts to 3 point line, is denied, makes "swim
move", calls for the ball, and cuts backdoor. Finish with layup. Each side of floor
 2 on 0 : 1 player at top of key with ball, player 2 on block. V cut to get open, strong pass,
catch and face. Switch lines and sides of floor. Work on V cut and back door cuts.
 2 on 2: offense must make pass to player on wing using v cut or back door.
 2 on 0: Pass and Cut, Basket cut: 1 player at top of key with ball, player 2 on block. V cut to
get open, strong pass, catch and face. ON pass to wing, PG cuts makes basket cut. pass for
layup. Timing and spacing.
 2 on 2: Pass and Cut, basket cut: Add defense, pass to wing, try to make pass for layup.
Spacing, timing, ball fakes, strong with ball. Switch sides of floor.

Introduce Screening, Ball screens and screen away:

 2 on 0 Ball screens, middle ball screen

o Start elbow and top of key. work screen and roll. attack off of screen, then hit roll
man. both sides of floor.
 2 on 0 Side ball screen:
o V cut to get open, pass to wing, ball screen and roll. Attack off screen, then hit roll
man. Both sides of floor.
 2 on 0 and coach - Pass and screen away, CURL CUT:
o pass to coach and screen away. Curl and replace. 2 balls. Coach passes to curl for
layup, then hits screener replacing at elbow for jump shot. Both sides of floor
 2 on 0 + Coach - Pass and screen away, Flare Cut:
o Defense goes under, cutter flares for jump shot, screener cuts to rim. Each get shot.

Add Defense to each situation for later drills.

Form Shooting

Alignment, (The Turn) – Shooting arm, shoulder, and hip all point to the rim. Finish your jump shot with feet turned on
the landing

Follow through, (the Finger) – straight arm, finger through the rim, ball is released off index / pointer finger, snap your
wrist. Hold your follow through. Your off hand can frame the shot or touch the wrist

Jumping, (The Sweep) – always jump toward the basket. You should land 6 to 12 inches in front of where you shot it.
Your feet should be turned on the landing.

Power, (The Dip) – catch the ball at your chest, dip the ball to your waist, then shoot. This dip gives you power and
rhythm

Stance – narrow stance, feet turned

Our goal is to be a straight shooter. We only want to miss short or long.

1. Side misses:
a. Work on your alignment . Check your feet, shoulder, and elbow. You should be a one eye shooter, with
your arm in line with the basket and your right eye.
2. Short misses:
a. Work on your power, and the dip. Catch at chest, dip the ball to the hip and shoot.
b. For more power, jump forward more from long distances
3. Long misses:
a. More arch, work on relaxing your shoulder to shoot the ball higher

The Dip – Ball at your hip for The Turn – feet turned, arm, Follow through – Consistent
rhythm and power. shoulder, and hip aligned to the follow through with finger through
rim. “One Eyed Shooter” the rim, off hand framing shot
Great Jump shooters - shooting shoulder and hip aligned with basket, narrow stance, and consistent release
