EIS Lesson: “¿Que quieres?” / “What do you want?”

Level: Beginner to Intermediate Spanish FL Adult Classroom

Standards Addressed: 1.1, 1.2, 1.3, 2.1, 2.2, 3.1, 3.2, 4.1, 4.2, 5.1, 5.2

Lesson Goal:

• The students will learn to use the verb querer to express wants and desires.

• Students will learn to share personal information about their needs and wants.

• Students will practice writing about themselves.

Lesson Objectives:

• Students will be able to ask questions and make simple sentences about things or
activities that they want to do and what they like to do.

• Students will be able to express different things they like to do.

• Students will be able write short sentences about their likes and dislikes.

• Students will be able to order food in a Mexican Restaurant.

Lesson Plan:

I. Setting the Stage: “Yo quiero Taco Bell.”

A. Before the class begins, put up posters of the Taco Bell Chihuahua,
Uncle Sam, and posters of tourist sights in Mexico, Peru, and
Argentina. Place them in front of the class so that the students can
see it (Posters can be purchased online or images can be
downloaded and enlarged to poster size. See Appendix 1 for
samples of posters and images. Appendix 1.)
B. Ask students to look at the images and describe the things that they
see in the posters.
C. Write “¿Que quieres?” on the board.
1. Tell the students that the theme of this lesson is “¿Que
quieres?”
2. Tell the students that they are going to be learning about
expressing desires and wants with regards to food, activities,
things, and places.
3. Ask students to work in groups and to generate a list of some
of the things they want to do these coming months in
Spanish.
4. Have the students present the lists and then write them on the
board.
D. Briefly discuss the structure of the verb forms querer on the board
and talk about some of the things the students mentioned in class.
(Look at Appendix 2 for the board work for the different
conjugations of the verb querer.)

II. Comprehensible Input: Hoja de trabajo # 1/ Worksheet # 1. Vocabulary of


activities, places, and things presented.
A. Hand out worksheet #1. The students will work in pairs and match
the words with the pictures.
B. After the class finishes the worksheet, the work is checked in class.
C. When students understand the vocabulary.

III. Guided practice: “Yo quiero Taco Bell.”


A. On the second page of worksheet #1 the students will draw
pictures of the food.
B. After the class finishes the worksheet, the work is checked in class.
C. When students understand the vocabulary. Pass out worksheet #2.

IV. Application/Extension:
A. Speak about it:
1. Have the students role play in pairs. One student will be the
waiter and the other will order the food.
2. Students will have an “imaginary” potluck where they are
assigned specific foods to bring and they have to describe
the food in detail and why they like it.
B. Write about it:
1. Have the students write about an “imaginary” restaurant
they visited in Mexico and describe there culinary
experience.

V. Evaluation

A. Write-up for the extension section.


B. Overall participation grade.
C. Oral participation grade for the role-play (Rubrics for
Speaking/Oral activity in Appendix 3.)
