Tutorial

The document provides instructions for drawing and naming isomers of various alkanes, explaining why given alkane names are incorrect, drawing Newman projections of conformations of 2-methylbutane, and drawing the most and least stable conformers of butane and all conformers of pentane resulting from bond rotation.

Tutorial Chapter 3 - Alkane

1. Draw and name all isomers of:

a. C7H16
b. C8H18
c. C5H11Br

2. Explain why each of the following names is incorrect:

a. 2,2-Dimethyl-6-ethylheptane
b. 4-Ethyl-5,5-dimethylpentane
c. 3-Ethyl-4,4-dimethylhexane
d. 5,5,6-Trimethyloctane
e. 2-Isopropyl-4-methylheptane

3. Consider 2-methylbutane (isopentane). Sighting along the C2–C3 bond:

a. Draw a Newman projection of the most stable conformation.
b. Draw a Newman projection of the least stable conformation.

4. Butane could form several conformations resulting from bond rotation in the structure.
The followings are three conformations of butane which each conformer is more stable
than the other. Show the least and most stable conformers and explain factors that
contribute to their stability.

5. Draw all possible conformers of pentane that results from bond rotation at C2 and C3.
