To Obtain Performance Characteristics For Variable Speed Centrifugal Pump Operating at Different Impeller Speeds

The document outlines procedures to test the performance characteristics of a variable speed centrifugal pump operating at different impeller speeds, including measuring the pressure, power requirement, flow rate, and influence of pump speed by collecting data points at various pump speeds and flow increments controlled by adjusting the discharge valve and speed controller. Key apparatus involved are the centrifugal pump, motor, discharge and suction valves, and instruments to measure torque, pressure, flow rate, and water level.

OBJECTIVES

1. To obtain performance characteristics for variable speed centrifugal pump operating

at different impeller speeds.

Characteristics of the pump are: -

- Pressure (head) jump
- Power requirement
- Flow rate influence
- Pump speed influence

1. Suction valve Control the inlet

water into the
centrifugal pump

2 Centrifugal pump induce flow or

raise a liquid from
a low level to a
high level

3 Motor Converts
electricity to
mechanical energy,
drive the
centrifugal pump
4 Discharge valve Control the flow of
water

7 Pump suction Display the reading
gauge of inlet pressure

8 Water level reading Display the height

of water level
inside the water
tank
PROCEDURE

1) Make sure the height of the water level inside the water tank is zero.
2) The pump discharge and suction valves were turned to fully open, and the motor
speed was set at zero.
3) The motor turned on and ready for testing.
4) Maximum pump speed, N1, was set to 50% (adjust the speed control).
5) The volume of flow indicator is noted and decides suitable increments in flow to give
adequate sample points about 15 points between zero and maximum flow).
6) Discharge valve closed, wait for the reading to be steady, and the reading was
collected.
7) The discharge valve is opened slightly, to give the first increment in volume flow.
When readings are steady, take the measurements.
8) Repeat step 7, the final measurements corresponding to the valve being fully open.
9) The experiment then was repeated at pump speed corresponding to speed control
position of 75% and 100%.
