1 What do you think life in the future will look like ? (say 20 years from now).
It’s incredibly hard to say with any kind of certainty what life in the future will look like.
Though based on the current state of the world and recent history there are a few assumptions
that can be made. The democratization of affordable artificial learning and neural networks will
create a wave of intellectualbased jobs being replaced by machines which I will call the
intellectual revolution.
In much the same way that the industrial revolution drastically reduced the number of
physicallabor based jobs, I believe that the intellectual revolution will drastically reduce the
need for humans doing work such as diagnosing illnesses, doing paperwork for law, writing
articles, and complex activities like driving autos. Machines are much faster, and often more
capable than humans, so they’d likely do these jobs better than we ever could hope to. The
issue here is that if we replace all human workers with machine workers then what will humans
do?
In an ideal world there will be a new age of freedom and prosperity. If we are able to
automate the fulfilment of basic human needs then humans may be able to stop working and
focus on things that they truly enjoy. There could be a world where we are able to spend time
with our families and friend, spend time exploring the world and making society more accepting
and equitable. Though if everything is automated and that automation supports everyone then
we can only hope that whoever controls the infrastructure has good intentions, or else we’d
have a dystopian society on our hands.
2 What do you think the jobs of the future will be like ?
I believe that humans will always find something to do. Once we’ve created a self
sustaining, fully automated infrastructure we will still be driven by curiosity to explore, interact
socially, and be creative. There will definitely be jobs that need to support the infrastructure, but
there will likely also be more jobs in the arts and humanities.
3 What do you think engineering jobs of the future, and skill needed for engineers will be
like?
The only engineering jobs that will exist will be those that focus on automating processes
and improving the efficiencies of those self sustaining processes. Engineers will need to know
how to code and how to make systems run at peak efficiency. There will also be plenty of work
for the development of new technology that these systems can use to run even more efficiently.
