The P21E1 is a bidirectional unit which interfaces 21 plesiochronous 2048 Kbit/s signals and the STM-4-BPF signal
(BPF=back panel format).
Only 16 x 2Mbit/s signals are processed: 12 accesses are hosted on the AFOX and 4 accesses on the optional
M4E1 expansion module.
P21E1N is similar to the basic P21E1 with the following two differences:
z P21E1N implements also the NT functionality on ISDN Primary Rate Access (PRA). This feature is
programmable via SW, in order to include or exclude the NT functionality for each single port. The same
P21E1N unit can mix ports that apply and ports that do not apply the NT functionality.
z P21E1N can perform Retiming:
Î The Retiming function applies the Equipment Clock to the outgoing 2Mbit/s signal that
therefore becomes synchronized with the SDH network synchronization reference.
Î This feature is programmable via SW, in order to include or exclude the Retiming for each
single port. The same P21E1N unit can mix ports that apply and ports that do not apply the
Retiming.
P21E1N-M4 is similar to P21E1N with the following difference:
z instead of “bit slip” retiming, “frame slip” retiming is implemented in case of PRA activation.
 “PRA is described in Appendix”

HC-LINK(High Capacity LINK) cards are used for Multi-shelf configuration.

 Maximum span covered: 11m.
They are used always in a MSP (1+1) configuration.
The 10Gbit/s aggregate bandwidth is delivered as a set of four independent 2.5Gbit/s channels.
TX1 (RX1) handles 2 x 2.5Gbit/s channels and TX2 (RX2) handles the other two. Thus the connection between one
transmitter and the relevant receiver has a 5Gbit/s rate. This connection requires a specific cable (ribbon) made of
12 optical fibers of which only ten are used in the following way; each 2.5Gbit/s channel uses five fibers:
z four fibers drive a parallel data word at 622Mbit/s, while the fifth fiber is used to carry a clock signal at
622MHz.
z The clock and the data are synchronous and are tightly matched in order to allow the receiver device to
sample the four bits with the active edge of the clock.

Compared with 1660SM or 1670SM: SYNTH cards combine all basic functions of EQUICO and MATRIX cards on one
card.

 SYNTH performs several functions:

z connections between ports
z equipment synchronization
z Equipment Controller (not if the card is put in slot 10 of 1650SM-C)
z Shelf Controller
z performance monitoring collection
z remote inventory

SYNTH cards have a 32x32 STM-1 equivalent matrix capacity which can be used for Higher Order Level or for Lower

1650SM-C and 1660SM equipment can house two CONGI (CONtrol and General Interface) cards, referred as CONGI-
A and CONGI-B.
If CONGI card is used as CONGI-A, all of the connectors are operative.
If CONGI card is used as CONGI-B, only connector #1 (Power) and connector #2 (Housekeeping and Remote Alarm)
are operative. In this case, a different subset of Housekeeping and Remote Alarms is provided.
CONGI-A holds the equipment MAC (Media Access Control) address (002060xxxxxx). The MAC address stored in
CONGI-B is not used; thus when CONGI-A is faulty or missing, the equipment MAC address is equal to
002060FFFFFF.
A new hardware named “CONGI 3W” provides a serial communication interface with the FAN SHELF, in order to
receive information like presence of fan unit, fans alarms, etc. In this case one connector of FAN SHELF must be
connected with connector 4 of CONGI.
Furthermore, CONGI 3W provides only 4 housekeeping inputs instead of 6.

1650SM-C can host up to 3 ETH-MB Port cards.
1660SM can host up to 12 ETH-MB Port cards.
11 interfaces (10/100 baseT) are available directly on the ETH-MB.
ETH-MB can be used in conjunction with ETH-ATX or GETH-AG Access cards which give access to further Ethernet
signals.
 Basic Functions:
z GFP (Generic Framing Procedure): mapping of Ethernet streams in VC-12, VC-3 and VC-4 SDH virtual
containers. Packet concatenation allows to use more than one VC-12 (up to 8) and more than one VC-3 (up to
2) for each Ethernet stream.
z Rate adaptation:
Î Mapping Ethernet flow inside VC–12/3/4 implies a bandwidth compression.
Î Incoming Ethernet signal is stored in an elastic buffer before forwarding it to the selected VC. When the
buffer reaches a fixed threshold a particular frame is inserted communicating to the Source (i.e. switch
or router) to stop transmission for a certain period (specified in this frame). In this way frame discarding
is avoided.
The total bandwidth limitation from ETH-MB towards matrix is four STM-1s equivalent, whatever the slot is.

The unit allows the management of packets data services over Ethernet and their transportation over the SDH network.
The Ethernet packets are labelled and then mapped onto SDH frames via PPP/HDLC framing:
z in substance it performs the MPLS technique, which consists of binding one or more labels to the packets, in
this way permitting the forwarding of a packet to the other nodes of the network, without inspecting the level 3
header.

There are two types of PR_EA:

The ISA PR is a self contained, independent sub-system operating in the OMSN 1660SM chassis. ISA PR is not
connected to the rest of the node from a system perspective except for the drawing of power from the backplane.
The role of the ISA PR inside 1660SM is to provide a shared carrier-class Ethernet Packet Ring:
z embedded physically into the SDH infrastructure. STM-4 interfaces of ISA PR card are connected to STM-4
cards by means of optical fibers. The signal of the STM-4 card is cross-connected with the STM-N cards
belonging to the ring by means of SDH matrix function (overlay mode).
or alternatively
z connected directly to independent fibers: the STM-4 interfaces of two ISA PR cards are connected together
(independent mode).
The Ethernet packets are labelled and then mapped onto SDH frames via PPP/HDLC framing.
The mapping between the ISA PR STM-4 interfaces and the STM-N ports of the ring is chosen by the operator among
the following:
z single STM-4: VC-4-4c or VC-4-4v
z dual STM-4: VC-4-6v or VC-4-8v

The configuration of COWLA2 requires the operator to specify the type of each module : B&W or colored.
In case of colored module, one wavelength out of the eight available wavelengths ITU-T compliant must be chosen. For
each wavelength there is a different module. Wavelengths: 1470-1490-1510-1530-1550-1570-1590-1610nm.
COWLA realizes both the “wavelength assignment” (transponder) and the “wavelength regeneration” (regenerator) on
the two separated channels supported.
Each channel is constituted of two bidirectional optical interfaces on which is realized ‘3R’ functionality(Re-
amplification, Re-shaping and Re-timing).
z When working as transponder the optical interfaces of the channel are one B&W and one colored.
z When working as regenerator both the optical interfaces of the channel are colored.

Each fan unit is composed of four fans and some electronic circuits necessary for: fan and alarm management, dust
filter management, remote inventory, power supply.
The core of the fan unit is the “fan controller” that generates alarms in case of:
z almost one fan is out of order (FAN AL1, FAN AL2, FAN AL3, FAN AL4).
z temperature exceed 55° C (TEMP AL).
z failure of power supply 48V (AL BAT_A, AL BAT_B).
z secondary voltage 12V not present (PSU ALM #n ).
The fan controller reports the alarms on a serial link (connectors 4, 5, 6 of Fan Shelf) toward the CONGI board
(connector 4) in order to transfer the information to the Shelf Controller on the SYNTH (1650SM-C) or MATRIXN
(1660SM) unit. This feature is possible only with CONGI 3W.
The fan controller generates an alarm called ALM_URG B #n if at least one fan is faulty or the 12Vdc is not present.
ALM_URG_B and PSU ALM (sent toward connectors 4, 5, 6 of Fan Shelf) can be connected to CONGI
housekeeping.
In case of 1650SM-C the Fans Shelf 19” is two times wide than a 1650SM-C shelf. This means that:
z if one 1650SM-C is installed in the left part of the Rack, only the left part of the Fan Shelf 19” will be
equipped.
z if one 1650SM-C is installed in the right part of the Rack, only the right part of the Fan Shelf 19” will be
equipped.
z if two 1650SM-C are side by side in the Rack the whole Fan Shelf 19” will be equipped.
z if one 1650SM-C is installed in a 19” Rack using the dedicated adapter, the whole Fan Shelf 19” will be
equipped.
In case of 1660SM the Fan Shelf 19” is as wide as the 1660SM shelf. Therefore 1660SM equipment must be
equipped with four fan units for Fan Shelf 19” and two dust filters for Fan Shelf 19”.

2.8 Appendix 1 - 2Mbit/s Frame
basic frame
The synchronous 2048 Kbit/s signal is structured on a 256-bits frame, numbered 1 to 256; it is composed by 32
time slots (TS), numbered 0 to 31 (TS0 to TS31), each time slot containing 8 bits. The frame repetition rate is
8000 Hz (time period 125 ms).
TS0 is used as the OverHead of the frame, for purposes as: frame alignment, error integrity check, messaging,
etc.
The following figure shows the allocation of bits 1 to 8 (i.e. Time Slot 0, TS0) in the basic frame structure of
synchronous 2Mbit/s signal.
 The frames contain, alternatively, the 7-bits frame-alignment-signal (FAS = 0011011, bits 2 to 8). (ITU-T G.704)

CRC-4
The following figure shows the allocation of bits 1 to 8 (i.e. Time Slot 0, TS0) in the CRC-4 multiframe structure
of synchronous 2Mbit/s signal. CRC-4 is the abbreviation for Cyclic Redundant Check-4, a signal elaboration
procedure to check the error integrity.
Each CRC-4 multiframe, which is composed of 16 frames numbered 0 to 15, is divided into two 8-frame sub-
multiframes (SMF), designated SMF-I and SMF-II which signify their respective order of occurrence within the
CRC-4 multiframe structure. Each sub-multiframe duration is 1 ms, rated 1000 Hz. The SMF is the CRC-4 block
size (i.e. 2048 bits).
Refer to ITU-T G.704 rec. for details information.

Cisco Gigabit Ethernet High-Speed WAN Interface Card

®
The Cisco Gigabit Ethernet High-Speed WAN Interface Card (HWIC) brings Gigabit Ethernet connectivity
to Cisco Integrated Services Routers routers to accelerate applications such as Metro Ethernet access,
inter-VLAN routing, and high-speed connectivity to LAN switches.

Overview
The single-port Cisco Gigabit Ethernet HWIC provides Gigabit Ethernet optical and copper connectivity in a compact
form factor for all Cisco Integrated Service Routers (ISRs).

The Gigabit Ethernet HWIC enables branch offices to cost-effectively use high-speed uplinks in numerous
environments (Figure 1). The enhanced performance of Gigabit Ethernet in Cisco ISRs to enable new applications
and services, as well as provide greater capacity for existing inter-VLAN routing and bridging capabilities.
Additionally, branch offices can now connect to metropolitan-area networks (MANs).

Note: The HWIC provides Gigabit Ethernet connectivity but will not support line rate since the throughput is
limited by the platforms.

For flexibility, the HWIC includes one Small Form-Factor Pluggable (SFP) slot to carry any Cisco copper or optical
SFP (Table 1), allowing customers to use different SFPs for special distance, cost, existing infrastructure, and future
expansion requirements.
®
Cisco IOS Software provides enhanced capabilities such as quality of service (QoS), Multiprotocol Label Switching
(MPLS), IP Security (IPSec), and Layer 3 VPNs. Since this is a true routed port card, the user can configure an IP
address directly on the HWIC-1GE-SFP interface and does not have to configure the port for VLAN trunking as is
done in Switched Virtual Interface (SVI) configurations.

Gigabit Ethernet Applications

Gigabit Ethernet in the Branch Office

In a branch office, the Cisco Gigabit Ethernet HWIC provides a high-speed uplink. Figure 2 shows the HWIC being
used to bridge non-routable protocols, while providing Layer 3 connectivity. The HWIC is also useful in situations
that require IEEE 802.1q inter-VLAN routing and in any LAN requiring fiber connectivity.

Figure 2. VLAN Trunking Application

Gigabit Ethernet in MANs

Figure 3 shows the Cisco Gigabit Ethernet HWIC used to connect Layer 3 VPNs over a MAN. Cisco IOS Software
enables QoS applications such as traffic shaping and Network-Based Application Recognition (NBAR). As with
VLAN trunking, this is ideal for situations in which fiber connectivity is desirable.

Cisco Channelized T1/E1 and ISDN PRI Modules for the Integrated
Services Routers
®
The Cisco Channelized T1/E1 and ISDN PRI High-Speed WAN Modules combine multiple T1/E1 WAN
connectivity-Channelized T1/E1 and ISDN Primary Rate Interface (PRI), in the same card. Applications
include fractional or full T1/E1 WAN connectivity, ISDN PRI for primary WAN link or WAN backup, and
dial access aggregation. With flexible WAN connectivity options, together with integrated routing, security,
voice, and wireless capabilities, the Cisco Integrated Services Routers can meet every need of enterprise-
class branch offices today and in the future. Three versions are available, 1- and 2-port cards (Figure 1) in
a single-wide high-speed WAN interface card (HWIC), and a 8-port cards (Figure 2) in a single-wide
network module. The different versions help enable customers to deploy different port densities according
to the needs of individual offices.

The modules can be used in T1 or E1 networks, selectable by software configuration. The integrated channel service
unit/data service unit (CSU/DSU) function allows customers to consolidate customer premises equipment (CPE).
The modules support balanced and unbalanced E1 connectivity and conform to the G.703 and G.704 standards for
unframed and framed E1 modes. The Channelized T1/E1 and ISDN PRI modules work with the digital modem
module in the Cisco 2800, 2900, 3800, and 3900 Series Integrated Services Routers to provide V.90- and V.92-
compliant digital dial access aggregation.

The 1- and 2-port Channelized T1/E1 and ISDN PRI HWICs are updated versions of the E1/T1 ISDN PRI network
modules, with the same functions and performance in a compact form factor of HWIC. You can save the network
module slots for other LAN/WAN connectivity, and your deployment flexibility is greatly enhanced.

● PRI for data

Key Benefits
Enhanced Flexibility
The Cisco E1/T1 ISDN PRI HWICs are software-configurable between E1 or T1 operation, balanced or unbalanced
E1 termination, and CSU/DSU. Customers no longer need to buy a specific module for T1 support and then another
card for E1 connectivity. In addition, the same modules provide for balanced (120-ohm) and unbalanced (75-ohm)
E1 termination. Table 1 lists available cable adaptors.

Support for G.703 Unstructured E1 Signaling

ITU signaling standard G.703 was previously available only on Cisco midrange routers through the voice/WAN
interface card (VWIC-xFT-G703), which did not support data PRI. Framed E1 (G.704) is also supported for
international customers without G.703 service.

Increased Manageability and Troubleshooting

Critical loopback support makes the Cisco Channnelized T1/E1 and ISDN PRI Modules easy to manage. Both
models can internally loop back the onboard framer chip toward the interface, thus eliminating the need for an
external loopback plug. Local, remote, line, and payload loopbacks, complement the management features of the
Cisco Channelized T1/E1 and ISDN PRI Module.

Reliability
Integrating the external E1/T1 terminating device (CSU/DSU) increases the overall system reliability. Possible points
of failure are reduced by eliminating the second power supply, additional fans, extra cabling, and other equipment
that accompany a “two-box” solution. This increase in reliability allows service providers to more easily and cost-
effectively meet the requirements of their customers’ service-level agreements (SLAs) and provides enterprises with
maximum equipment uptime.
