Blink Blink Group: Assignment 1

This group assignment discusses key differences between studying at university versus high school. It argues that university requires greater self-study awareness, less academic pressure, and more freedom compared to high school. Specifically, it states that university encourages independent learning and discussion, while high school focuses more on memorization. It also claims that university examinations are less important than the skills developed, unlike the high-pressure tests to enter good universities from high school. Finally, it maintains that college students have more autonomy over their schedules and clothing choices than students in high school.

Course: Writing AE2

Friday afternoon class
Write an argumentative essay about studying at university and
studying at high school.

Stepping into university means encountering radical changes from what one
has experienced in high school. For this significant transition, students must have
good preparations, a basis for successful adaptation. Therefore, it is vital to
understand the key differences between high school and university in the following
aspects, including self-study awareness, study pressure, and freedom.
Firstly, tertiary education encourages students to develop awareness of self-
study more than high school education does. High school teachers interpret the
information from the text books and transfer to pupils, who normally passively
accept and memorize. However, at university, it is expected of students to discuss
issues academically and cooperate with other classmates to undertake projects or
presentations. Therefore, they need to put much more effort into self-study and
self-access. Besides, universities provide leaners with more independence and
freedom, given that the regulations are more liberal compared with rigid, strictly
established school rules. Furthermore, university students can adjust their own
learning methods as long as they satisfy the courses’ requirements.
Another point that needs considering is the academic pressure in presence
when studying at university and high school. High school education includes
considerable pressure deriving from preference for all-rounded excellence, family
expectations, and hefty workload. On the other hand, students at university may
not experience such tension while studying their courses. Moreover, a common,
mostly parents-supported misconception leads to the belief that students are to
acquire top grades to secure a decent job. To make matters worse, there is the
National High School Graduation Exam in which only participants with flying

colours could get the acceptance to prestigious universities and colleges. In
contrast, examinations are not as vital for undergraduates, they need certain sets of
skills where a lot of analysis with in-depth research and solid experience are
involved if one desires to succeed.
Finally, college students are generally offered more autonomy compared with
their high school counterparts. College students have freedom to create their own
academic schedules based on personal preference. College curriculum is built in
ways that gives them time to discover their interests. On the contrary, high school
students are required to take a variety of subjects, some of which are not even
relevant to their eventually majored fields. This leaves them demotivated and
feeling indifferent in studying inapplicable subjects. Furthermore, autonomy is also
shown through students’ dressing. While in high school uniforms are expected,
college students struggle to choose what clothes should be worn on a daily basis.
Therefore, college students, in general, have more freedom as proved above.
In conclusion, there are three mainly focused aspects that differ between
study in high school and its more superior level of education, university. These
differences raise students’ awareness and suggest precise attitudes and behaviours
in preparation for university.
