EXPERIMENT No: 1
TITLE:
“To Study the Software of ArcGIS”
INTRODUCTION:
The introduction of this software shows you that how to use the Arc Map module to create a
simple map. Arc Map is one of the modules in ArcGIS Desktop. ArcGIS is an integrated software
package available at three different licensing levels. The lowest and least expensive of these
is ArcView, once strictly a stand-alone program but now also a member of the ArcGIS family. This
is succeeded upward in price by Arc Editor and then by ArcInfo.
OBJECTIVE:
The main objective of this software is to learn the basics of using GIS data to explore an area
and create a map.
RELATED THEORY:
1. CREATING A MAP WITH ARCMAP
.First of all Starting arc map, opening arc catalog, and adding data and then Getting around
the map. Now set a coordinate system for the data frame. And then defining the general
and zymology properties for a layer. Then drawing a layer based on an attribute value (land
use). Then Selecting and mapping the largest cities. Using the “select by attribute” function.
After that Selecting towns by their location relative to railroads. Then labeling a layer based
on an attribute field. And also using large scale data. And also using data from ArcGIS online
and also measuring distance and area and drawing a map to scale.
CREATING A LAYOUT FOR PRINTING OR GRAPHIC EXPORT
First Saving map files under different names. And then adding a second data frame to show
an inset map. When printing or exporting from ArcMap, the software creates a Windows
enhanced metafile (EMF) of the layout or data view. Once the EMF file has been created,
ArcMap sends it to the printer engine or export driver selected for the conversion to the
final output.
RESULTS:
The result of this system provides the big infrastructure for making maps and geographic
information available throughout an organization, across a community, and openly on the Web.
COMMENTS:
The ArcGIS is a wide geographic information system (GIS) for working with maps and
geographic information. ArcGIS is also used for using and creating maps, compiling geographic
data, analyzing mapped information, sharing and discovering geographic information, using
maps and geographic information in a range of applications, and managing geographic
information in a database.
