Fall19 Lab Syllabus
Fall19 Lab Syllabus
This lab is designed to give the student the opportunity to verify theoretical
concepts introduced in lecture (such as frequency response, filtering, modulation,
etc.) and to understand how these concepts relate to real-world systems. It does so
by leading the student through the design of a simple AM radio receiver and
allowing the student to get hands-on experience with equipment common to any
electronics laboratory. Each section meets every other week for 5 lab sessions as
outlined below at the lab room (4072 Electrical and Computer Engineering
Building). The prelab is due in lab. The lab report is due at 6 pm a week after lab
is completed. (Except for report 5)

Laboratory Policy:
Lab Reports and Pre-labs:
For every lab session, each student must bring the corresponding lab-handout, that
can be found in the course website (you have to print them out). It contains detailed
instructions for each experiment, along with a prelab assignment. The handout has
space allotted for all necessary data, calculations, graphs, explanations and
comments for both the in-lab and pre-lab exercises. The writing should be clear
(print if needed). Prelabs are due in the lab. Lab reports are due at 7 pm on the
day according to the schedule table, into the dropbox of the TA in charge of
your section (Dropboxes are located on third floor next to Undergraduate lounge,
TAs name and sections are marked on the boxes). Turning into wrong dropbox
will deduct 5 points.
Basic rules of courtesy must be followed when in the lab. Please do not remove any
lab equipment from the lab at any time. Do not bring food or drink into the lab.
Open lab:
Open Lab hour is not meant to be an extension of regular lab hours. Open Lab hour
is dedicated for students who HAVE NOT completed the lab and need additional
help and time.
Demo signature:
Students have to make demo to the TA or lab assistant to show that they have
finished the lab in order to get demo signature. Demo signature is required to
receive full credit. Half credits will be given to the report if no demo signature.
Academic Integrity:
Although all lab work is done in teams of two or three students, each student has to
turn in their own pre-lab and lab report. If total or partial copy of others work is
detected, you will receive a lower score. The score will be calculated dividing it by
all the students involved in cheating. In case of cheating (make sure use your own
experimental data and let your TA to check your data make sense), ZERO CREDIT
will be given for that lab assignment, and the academic authorities will be noticed.
Experimental data can be shared among the members of the same team, but
comments and explanations should be written individually.
Grading and Late Policy:
Your labs will be graded by the TA's supervising your sections. Any requests for
missing grades, re-grades, etc. should be sent to them. Please try to check your lab
grades on Compass regularly. All late lab reports will be deducted 20 points.
Zero credits will be given if not submitted within two weeks the report was
due.
Protoboards:
Each group of students will be assigned a 2.2 X 6.5 INCH protoboard (see in figure
1), you should keep on yours until the last lab. You are responsible of keeping it in
good shape and bringing it every time your section meets. To keep it inside a little
box (not provided) during transportation is recommended. If you damage or lose the
protoboard, you will be charged the cost of a new one in your student account.
Figure 1. Each thick blue line shown in the protoboard picture above indicates a
common node in the circuit.
Assembling the radio receiver:
In figure 2 we can see each of the subsystems that are part of the AM radio
receiver. Each of the subsystems will be built during lab time. In this diagram it is
indicated the corresponding lab associated to each component. (e.g. the envelope
detector will be built during lab #1, while the IF and the Audio amplifiers will be built
during lab #2 ). Further instructions will be provided in each lab printout.
