Psalm 16 Ps OfDelight
Psalm 16 Ps OfDelight
Psalm 16 Ps OfDelight
No trials or tribulations in this song. Very Personal Hymn of JOY focussing on God’s
Goodness.
Personal Pronoun MY – dozen times.
David is simply delighting,
FIRST of all, in the Lord. "You are my Lord, my goodness is nothing apart from
You" (v. 2).
In other words, he is saying, "I have no good beyond God."
1. Principle No. 1: I have no good beyond God.
Eg: Ambur ,// Stick to one model, good principle for life. Ford, Spouse.
“Taste and see that the Lord is good.
I'll. Baby girl says to mom I'll eat your face. Both enjoyed eating…
Dad least bothered. Dad's delight was in mobile.
No normal behaviour, talk.....
Have I tasted every part of God, His face, eyes, mouth, heart, mind, wisdom,
Betty is three sticking to mom all the time.
As she grows and becomes big no sticking, because other things stick to her.
As we grow bigger, in pride, capacity, strength, wisdom, smartness... Less
dependent upon him.
His face grows dull, less and less delightful.
Remember the Lord doesnt change.
Our view Of him, His worth in our eyes diminishes
Another thing happens as we grow bigger....
We grow lesser in humility, grace.
John the Baptizer's Principle: He must Increase...... I..... Decrease.
The words I and Decrease never go together. I goes well with Increase, Receive,
Profit, ......
2. Principle No.Two:
MY delight in the Lord controls MY every other delight.
The measure or degree of delight in the Lord dictates my delight in EVERY other
thing.
Things of the world will grow strangely dim in the light of your glory and grace.
When you give first place and priority to God then there's hardly any place left for
other things.
Depends upon how big your God is.
Tozer says What comes to your mind when you think about God is the most
important thing about you.
Principle No.4:
Recognize the Hand of God in all provisions:
David also delights in God's providence. "You, O Lord, are the portion of my
inheritance and my cup; you maintain my lot. The lines have fallen to me in pleasant
places" (vv. 5,6).
God, in His providence, knows where to draw the line.
Problems arise when people don't know where His lines are.
They want to keep moving the line. Let God give you your inheritance. When Israel
went into the Promised Land, He gave each tribe its inheritance. It wasn't done by a
real estate agent or by a lottery. God said, "Here are the lines. Maintain those lines."
Do you want to delight in God and in His people? Then delight in His providence.
v11: David also finds delight in God's pleasures. Verse 11 has been my life verse
for many years. "You will show me the path of life; in Your presence is fullness of joy;
at Your right hand are pleasures forevermore."
Principle No.4: Learn to be Content with what He gives:
Paul – I have learnt to be CONTENT…..
Citizen: “ O my Lord, when I have YOU, I have everything”
_----------
Our Holiest Example
"I have set the LORD always before me: because He is at my right hand, I shall not
be moved" (Psalm 16:8).
This is the way to live. With God always before us, we shall have the noblest
companionship, the holiest example, the sweetest consolation, and the mightiest
influence. This must be a resolute act of the mind. "I have set," and it must be
maintained as a set and settled thing. Always to have an eye to the LORD's eye and
an ear for the LORD's voice--this is the right state for the godly man. His God is near
him, filling the horizon of his vision, leading the way of his life, and furnishing the
theme of his meditation. What vanities we should avoid, what sins we should
overcome, what virtues we should exhibit, what joys we should experience if we did
indeed set the LORD always before us! Why not? This is the way to be safe. The
LORD being ever in our minds, we come to feel safety and certainty because of His
being so near. He is at our right hand to guide and aid us; and hence we are not
moved by fear, nor force, nor fraud, nor fickleness. When God stands at a man's
right hand, that man is himself sure to stand. Come on, then, ye foemen of the truth!
Rush against me like a furious tempest, if ye will. God upholds me. God abides with
me. Whom shall I fear?

Thinking About Heaven
In his classic devotional book titled The Saint’s Everlasting Rest, English Puritan
pastor and author Richard Baxter (1615-1691) wrote:
“Why are not our hearts continually set on heaven? Why dwell we not there in
constant contemplation? . . . Bend thy soul to study eternity, busy thyself about the
life to come, habituate thyself to such contemplations, and let not those thoughts be
seldom and cursory, but bathe thyself in heaven’s delights.”
That’s sound advice. Instead of spending all of our time thinking about where we are,
we as believers in Jesus Christ also need to think about where we’re going to be.
We’ll go to a place prepared especially for us (Jn. 14:2). We’ll be with God, where
we’ll enjoy “pleasures forevermore” (Ps. 16:11).
Baxter goes on to point out four benefits of thinking about heaven: It protects us from
temptation because it keeps the heart focused on what pleases God. It maintains the
vigor of the Christian life. It provides medicine for our afflictions, cheering our spirits
and easing our suffering. And it makes us an encouragement to our fellow pilgrims.
With this in mind, we ask as Baxter did, “Why are not our hearts continually set on
heaven?”
Those who have their hearts fixed on heaven will hold loosely the things of earth.
