This research proposal aims to investigate the prevalence of depression and anxiety among elementary male and female students in Sahiwal City, Pakistan. The study will utilize a self-administered questionnaire distributed to 300 students (150 urban, 150 rural) to examine factors related to depression and anxiety, and their impact on student performance. Descriptive statistics and IBM SPSS will be used for data analysis. The study seeks to determine the role of teachers in student social development, identify suggestions for schools to prevent mental health issues, and understand the underlying causes of depression and anxiety among elementary students.

INTRODUCTION

The WHO (World Health Organization) defines depression as:

"A common mental disorder, feeling of sadness, feelings of guilt, feeling low self-worth, low
self- confidence, loss of interest, disturbed sleep, feelings of sadness and poor concentration
on work”.

Depression is severe mood disorder covered a variety of negative moods and behavioral
changes and is fourth leading cause of social disability in the world (Ildar, 2004). Depression
is one of the four major diseases in the world and is the most common cause of disability
from diseases. students are a special group of people that are enduring a critical transitory
period in which they are going (Frotani, 2005).

Anxiety is defined by the American Psychological Association as an

"Emotion characterized by feelings of depression, worried thoughts and physical changes


such as blood pressure issues, state of uneasiness, panic issues”.

Anxiety has governed effects on students in the classroom. Anxious students are more likely
have learning difficulties also problem-solving techniques and discussion making suffer as
well. In present days depression and anxiety are commonly found among elementary female
students, about 10% of elementary school students attempts suicide every year and it is now
the third leading cause of death among students (Mahmoud, 2012). The risk is also higher
when depression is at higher stage. It is also found that single stage best predictor of suicide
is the sense of hopelessness which mostly students have. Depression badly effects students’
performance. All previous studies suggest high rates of psychological problems among
students (Reavley, 2010).

PROBLEM STATEMENT

The study will be designed to investigate the prevalence of depression and anxiety among
elementary male and female students.

GENERAL OBJECTIVES

The gender based study regarding the prevalence of depression and anxiety among female
students: A case study of AIOU.
Objectives of the study

1. To determine the role of teacher in social development of students


2. To compile suggestions for elementary schools to spurn from mental disorders
3. To determine the reasons behind depression and anxiety among elementary students.

METHODLOGY

Population

All male and female students of elementary schools at Sahiwal city will constitute the
population of the study.

Sample

Only two groups, each group consist of 150 students (150 from urban elementary schools and
150 from rural elementary schools) will be selected to investigate the impact of depression
and anxiety on students’ performance.

Data collection

Data will be collected form elementary schools of Sahiwal city. A self-administrative


questionnaire will be given to 300 students to investigate the depression and anxiety among
elementary male and female students.

Limitation

Due to shortage of time and other resources it will be difficult to include all elementary
schools of district Sahiwal in the study therefore we will include only Sahiwal city’s
elementary schools in the study.

Analysis of data

Descriptive statistics would obtain in response to each question. The obtained data will be
studied from many angles as possible to explore the new facts. Data entry and analysis will
be prepared in IBM SPSS Statistics.
