Tutorial 3

This document provides an overview of exercises for a tutorial on complex analysis. The exercises are taken from textbooks by Zill and Shanahan and cover the following topics: 1. Exponential and logarithmic functions, including determining differentiability and image sets. 2. Complex integration, including evaluating integrals along contours and applying Cauchy's theorem and Cauchy's integral formula. 3. Using parametrizations to evaluate real integrals derived from complex integrals over the unit circle.

MATH 447: Tutorial III

Monday, October 21 19/20

Exercises are mostly taken from Zill and Shanahan’s book.

1 Exponentials and Logarithms

1. Determine the subset in C for which each of the following functions are differentiable:
(a) f (z) = exp(2z + i)
(b) g(z) = exp(z 2 ).
2. Determine the image of each of the following sets under the complex exponential map-
ping:
(a) the horizontal line y = −1
(b) the vertical line x = 2
(c) the infinite strip 1 < x ≤ 2
(d) the rectangle 0 ≤ x ≤ ln 2, −π/4 ≤ y ≤ π/2.
3. Find the principal values of the following logarithms:
(a) Log(−e2 )
(b) Log(1 + i)4
(c) Log(3 − 4i).
4. Find all complex values of z satisfying the given equations:
(a) exp(1/z) = −1
(b) exp(z − 1) = ie3 .
5. Find a domain in which the given function f is differentiable, and then find the derivative:
(a) f (z) = 3z 2 − exp(2iz) + iLog(z)
Log(2z − i)
(b) g(z) =
z2 + 1
6. Find the image of the given set under the mapping w = Log(z):
(a) the positive y-axis
(b) the ray arg(z) = π/6
(c) the region in the first quadrant bounded by the circles |z| = 1 and |z| = e
(d) the punctured disk 0 < |z| ≤ 1
(e) the region outside the unit circle |z| = 1 and between the rays arg(z) = π/4 and
arg(z) = 3π/4.

7. Find all complex values satisfying each of the given trigonometric equations:
(a) sin z = i
(b) cos z = i sin z
(c) sinh z = −1
(d) sinh z = exp(z).

2 Complex Integration
8. Evaluate the given integrals along the given contours:
Z
(a) (2z − z) dz, where C is x = −t, y = t2 + 2, 0 ≤ t ≤ 2
C

(b) Re(z) dz, where C is the circle |z| = 1
C

(c) exp z dz, where C is the polygonal path consisting of the line segments from
C
z = 0 to z = 2 and z = 2 to z = 1 + πi
Z
(d) Im(z − i) dz, where C is the path consisting of the circular arc along |z| = 1 from

C z +3

Explain why
ez
I

C z+3 z
is equal to the integral above and why in view of the result
I

C (z − z0 )
n 0 n 6= 1

the latter integral is slightly easier to evaluate.

I
11. Write down the value of exp z dz for any simple closed contour C in the complex
C
