NUMBER: SB 3.6/128
ISSUED: February 2018
REVISED:
PRODUCT: All Except Mercury 50
MODEL(S): All with Turbotronic 4 and Later
SPECIFICS: SoLoNOx
Recommended
Compliance: Information
PURPOSE:
The Burner Acoustic Monitor (BAM) system was developed for SoLoNOxTM combustion applications to
continuously monitor combustor dynamic pressure. As a protective device, BAM immediately indicates the
presence of a condition that could lead to turbine damage if unresolved. A new simplified version is being
introduced that installs directly to the engine torch. The new system eliminates the semi-infinite coil, which
can occasionally accumulate condensation. As a complete solution, the system will be known as BAM with
Active Control. There are numerous benefits to BAM with Active Control including reduced field
interventions to address the semi-infinite coil as well as prevention of engine failure by employing a reliable
active pilot control routine. The result is increased availability and reliability of your Solar Turbines package.

Figure 1. BAM Medium Temperature Torch-Mounted Sensor
Combustor dynamic pressure is measured in the test cell as part of the engine acceptance procedure to
ensure the engine is tuned for stable operation. Under normal circumstances, Solar’s combustion systems
will not engage the active pilot control logic. However, the control routine is always vigilant in case
something unbalances the system (e.g., low ambient temperature, a change in fuel composition, reduction
in fuel cleanliness, etc.). In such cases, BAM with Active Control will step-in to prevent possible engine
damage while allowing the unit to continue running. When BAM with Active Control is engaged, emissions
could be temporarily elevated in order to protect the equipment. Events should be uncommon and
minimally invasive when they do occur. However, in rare cases, an event could be significant and persist
with BAM with Active Control engaged. System status will be tracked and annunciated on the HMI. Solar’s
local field office should be notified if a unit is experiencing repeated events, or to ensure that the turbine
and control system are set-up properly
BAM with Active Control is the new production standard system for all SoLoNOx products except Mercury
50. BAM with Active Control can also be applied to fielded products via Solar Customer Services Upgrade.
BAM with Active Control consists of a new dynamic pressure sensor, signal conditioner, armored cable,
installation kit and active pilot control software.

Hardware Requirements:
• A second port has been added to the torch for mounting of the new dynamic pressure sensor. A
new torch may be required when upgrading to BAM 2.0 if the existing torch does not have the second
port.
3.0 AVAILABILITY
For new equipment, BAM with Active Control for SoLoNOx combustion engines is standard starting from
February 2017 bookings. For Customer Services, the BAM with Active Control retrofit kit is available for
bookings on TurbotronicTM 4 and later equipped packages as of November 2017. Contact your local Solar
field office for more information.
ACTION REQUIRED:
A series of BAM system retrofit kits have been developed making it possible to upgrade existing equipment.
The BAM system upgrade must be installed by qualified Solar field personnel to ensure proper operation
and performance of the system. Via Solar upgrade project, mechanical and electrical drawings are provided
with each kit. Required control system modifications, testing and adjustment must be performed by Solar
personnel.
1. Contact your local district service office to determine the appropriate kit part number based on the
certification requirement, torch type, and turbine model.
a. Reference your package serial number, engine rating, torch part number, and this service
bulletin number.
b. Availability and pricing will be advised at the time of the order.
NOTE
2. Order the BAM with Active Control retrofit kit through your local Solar district office. It is highly
recommended that kits are ordered and installed as part of a Solar Customer Services Upgrade
Project.
3. Contact your local district service office to coordinate installation of the BAM with Active Control
retrofit kit.
