Uses of Computer in Geology

Computers can be used in many ways to assist with geological work. This includes using software to write papers and theses, analyze geological data, interpret subsurface information, create 3D models and maps, and build geological data banks. Computer programs allow geologists to more easily study literature, present findings, perform slope stability analysis, and generate stereonets and other visualizations to better understand geological features and patterns. Overall, computers provide geologists with powerful tools to efficiently collect, analyze, interpret, store, and share different types of geological data and findings.

Uses of Computer in Geology
1. Literature
With the help of computer, we can find any type of geological literature. If we are
interested to know about the previous research on “Hydrocarbon Exploration”, we
just type a few letters and many research papers appear on our screen. For example,
“Springer” is a journal which is publishing a number of research papers. If we want
any research article, we can simply look for it.

2. Writing
a) Thesis
With the help of computer, we can do our thesis writing. For this purpose, we can
use Microsoft Word. This application is very convenient in this regard.

b) Research Paper
Computers can help us write our research papers. We can create text, make any
figure or map which is involved in our paper.

c) Report Writing
With the computer, we can write our reports of our projects. For example, writing
a report of one’s field.

3. Analysis of Geological Data

With the help of computer, we can analyze our geological data. For example,
Petroleum exploration and production involves complex techniques for analyzing
and interpreting large data. To get the most out of this data resource, it is necessary
to use effective data management tools for integrated analysis.

4. Geological Data Interpretation

Computers can help us interpret our geological data through providing us with many
applications and software.

5. Presentation
Presentations can be made with the help of the computer. Microsoft PowerPoint is
a computer program that help us to create a presentation. We can combine text,
graphics and multimedia to make a good presentation.
6. Geological Data Bank
Geological data bank can be created on our computer. For this purpose, Microsoft
Excel is a good computer software. Graphs and tables can be created for data
collection and analysis.

SR. NO. DAY DESCRIPTION SAMPLE NO. FIELD AREA

1 01 Limestone, Sandstone 1,2 Kava Section
2 02 Shale, Limestone 1,2 Khari-e-Murth
3 03 Sandstone, Shale 1,2 Karuli
4 04 Granite, Marble 1,2 Manshera
5 05 Orthogenesis 1 Dandhai

7. Subsurface Information
Computer workstation based interpretational software has revolutionized how
geophysical, geological, and engineering data are interpreted by the petroleum
industry. With help of this technique, we can make a geological log which is given
us whole information of subsurface data.

8. Slope Analysis
Slope stability analysis is performed to assess the safe design of human-made or
natural slopes. Slope stability is the resistance of inclined surface to failure by
sliding. The main objective of slope stability analysis is finding endangered areas,
investigation of potential failure and reliability. With the help of computer, we can
find the slope stability. There is some software like Slop-W and Slope Side.

9. 3D Models
Geological modelling is an applied science of creating computerized
representations of portions of the Earth crust based on geophysical observations
made on and below the Earth surface. Geomodelling is commonly used for
managing natural resources, identifying natural hazards and quantifying geological
processes, with some applications to oil and gas fields. Some software is Rockwork,
Vulcan and Surpac.
10. Stereonets and Projects
A stereonet is a lower hemisphere graph onto which a variety of geological data can
be plotted. With the help of computer, we can make stereonets of our projects.

11. Maps
We can make maps with help of our computer. Any data which is associated with a
street address can be mapped. Arc GIS is a software which can create a map.
