Assignment
Objective:
Name several processes and instruments that will be used to measure the different dimensions
including the angles of an engine block

Measurement According to Machined Part:

 Cylinder Diameter:
Engine Block diameters can be measured by using Simple Vernier Caliper but using an
Inside Vernier will be more suitable since the inside Vernier can go deeper in to the hole
as compare to the simple Vernier caliper that have a limit that up to how much depth we
can measure the diameter of holes.

 Bore:
Using the depth tail of the Simple Vernier Caliper, we can measure the Bore of the engine
block.

 Taps:
We can use thread gauge that we have used in here to measure the threads per units so for
smaller holes where thread gauge does not fit we can prepare custom tappers of specific
threading same as that in the holes so as to check if the threading is okay.

 Cylinder/Bore Spacing:
Direct distances like edge-to-edge distances can easily be measured by using a Vernier
Caliper like the distance from outer edge of one cylinder to the other cylinder’s outer edge.

 Stroke Length:
Using the depth tail of the Simple Vernier Caliper, we can measure the stroke length of
the engine block.

 Engine Block and Cylinder Chamfer Angles:

Angle Gauges can be used to measure the angle of the engine block effectively

Measurement According to Processes:

 Direct Distances:
Direct distances like edge-to-edge distances can easily be measured by using a Vernier
Caliper like the distance from one outer edge to the other side outer edge.

 Hole Diameters:
Although hole diameters can be measured by using simple Vernier Caliper but using an
Inside Vernier will be more suitable since the inside Vernier can go deeper in to the hole
as compare to the simple Vernier caliper which have a limit that up to how much depth we
can measure the diameter of holes.
 Hole with Varying Diameters:
In case of any Varying Diameter holes Inside Vernier caliper is a good Choice.

 Depth:
Using the depth tail of the Simple Vernier caliper we can measure the depth of any hole if
needed.

 Smaller hole Diameters:

For to small hole we can order Hole diameter gauges that would comprise of specific
diameter and will work just like block gauges.

 Threads/units:
We can use thread gauge that we have used in here to measure the threads per units so for
smaller holes were thread gauge doesn’t fit we can prepare custom tappers of specific
threading same as that in the holes so as to check if the threading is just right.

 Taper:
We can use angle gauges to measure the taper present in the part. However it will be quite
difficult since we will need a reference ground which will be difficult to set up. How-ever
if a taper was present in the part we can use other gauges although we haven’t read about
them yet i.e. Angle protector from a side can be used to measure outer tapers but need to
be on a side.

 Inside Tappers :
For the measurement of inside taper such as that in a cylinder at depth, we can use the
cylinder bore gauges. Although we are not familiar with it but mostly in industries we use
this gauges not only to measure the inside angle. It is also to measure the bore of the
cylinders such as the one present In the object given to us for our assignment.
