Problem Set 2 S2017

This document contains two parts for a highway engineering problem set on horizontal alignment. Part A contains 6 problems related to calculating lengths and stations for highway curves given radius and other design information. Part B contains 2 multi-part problems involving designing horizontal curves based on given radius, stations, and other parameters, including calculating safe speed, stations, offsets, widening, transition lengths, and traffic capacity.

Problem Set 2: Horizontal Alignment

Part A: Route Surveying

Problem 1:

What is the length of the long chord for the horizontal curve shown in the sketch below?

R = 600 m

Problem 2:

For the highway curve with a degree of curvature of 6 o 30’, what is the length of chord between STA
00+489.63 and STA 00+565.56 ?

Problem 3:

From the given curve design data calculate the stations of PC and PT of this horizontal curve.

R = 380 m, STAPI = 02+026.55 , I = 26o 14’ 11”

Problem 4:

From the following

llowing design information for a circular curve:

R = 228 m STAPC = 04+276.91 I = 12o04’ 15”

What is the deflection angle (from the PC to STA 04+324.00?

Problem 5:

What is the length of arc for the horizontal curve shown in the sketch below?

R = 225 m
Problem 6:

What is the length of tangent for the horizontal curve shown in the sketch below?

R = 110 m

Problem Set 2: Horizontal Alignment
Part B: Design of Horizontal Curves

Problem 1:

From the given horizontal curve design data:

R = 200 m, STAPI = 02+146.55 I = 36o 14’ 11”

And given that maximum super elevation = 8% , 2 lane/2 way and no median , lane width = 3.6 m
and level terrain, and 8% trucks. Assume design Truck (WB20)

Determine the following:

a- The Safe Speed for this curve
b- Stations for PC and PT (STAPC , STAPT )
c- The minimum Horizontal Side Offset Clearance for Sight Distance
d- The lane widening in the curve.
e- The transition length (Superelevation
Superelevation Runoff length) and draw highway cross
cross-section at
key transition Stations.
f- The maximum service volume for this curved segment (LOS =C)

Problem 2:

For the shown interchange left turn ramps, given for BOTH the following design data:
Maximum Superelevation = 5%
Lane width = 4.2 m
Lateral Clearance = 0.60 m both sides
Assume any missing information (i.e. PHF = 1, T%= 0 etc.)

a) Estimate the traffic capacity for each ramp given target LOS = C
b) Design the Acceleration & Deceleration Lanes only for Ramp A.
