CHAPTER 2

INTRODUCTION OF TOPIC AND IMPORTANCE OF

STUDY

8
As the demand for technology arises, so does the need for
digital marketing. Over 80% of people search for products and
services online, before making an actual purchase , which
means your online presence is crucial for your company’s
profitability.

If Software Development agency, all products and all clients

are online. primary goal should be great online exposure for
your brand, such as excellent Google ranking. In fact, 62% of
the B2B buyers claim that Internet is one of the three resources
they rely on for finding business solution .A better Digital
Marketing Plan actively links your clients to you through your
social media accounts, blogs, websites, online forums, and
mobile communications.

MARKETING STRATEGY INTRODUCTION

1. Set Your Goals

No matter if your business model is B2B or B2C, the first thing
you need to ask yourself before you start drawing a Digital
Marketing strategy is “What do I want to accomplish?’

You might want to attract more customers, increase your brand’s

awareness or promote a new software product you just
developed. Whatever your purpose is, defining your goals and
putting them into writing will lead to a significant possibility of
success.

An action without a goal leaves you with no idea where to go.

Having a better Digital Marketing Plan is a great way to know
what to focus on.

9
2. Define Your Target Market
Your target market is the group of people to whom your product
or service is most relevant and who are more likely to benefit
from it.

Based on your target market you will choose the right tactics to
drive more traffic to your sales funnel. When promoting a
product, your new software platform or interface you should
know not only who will use it, but also who will be the buyer.

For the Software development companies and particularly for

those who are focused on B2B, defining the target market can
be more complicated because most often the user is not the
actual decision maker.

10
Your marketing activities must be directed towards users,
influencers, buyers and the C-suite. For that purpose, you will
need to create buyer personas, write targeted content and
design landing pages according to their expectations and
demands.

According to the audience you aim to target, you will choose

how to approach it and how to communicate to it. The
effectiveness of your marketing activities strongly depends on
defining as accurately as you can your ideal customers by
conducting deep research. You should focus on the following
segmentation criteria:

 Demographics (Age, Location, Gender, Income level,

Education level)
 Psychographics (Personality, Attitudes, Values,
Interests/hobbies, Lifestyles)
 Behavior – purchasing patterns such as price
sensitivity, brand loyalty
 Business segmentation – business size, nature of
business, structure, etc.

11
3. Spend to Earn

Do you know that 28% of online searches convert into a sale

(Google, 2016)?

Do not be afraid to spend. Spend and you will earn. Digital

Marketing is the new trend for attracting mass consumers.

Allocating some of your budget on display ads, paid search ads,

or social ads can help you reach the target market and achieve
high conversion rates. Awareness of the brand is established.
Thus, potential customers will come to your website for further
information on their specific needs.

4. Focus on multiple channels and take advantage of what each

offers
There are different social media channels and each one has
pros and cons. Most of the businesses nowadays strive to be
active on as many channels as they can manage, but the truth is

12
that you need to find which social media platforms your users
get information from.

When it comes to software development and particularly B2B

companies, you have to pay attention to which platforms your
target audience seek business advice from.

LinkedIn is the most relevant social media channel as it is

business oriented and connects people from various industries
and networks who both offer or seek solutions for their business.
80% of B2B marketing leads come through LinkedIn (LinkedIn,
2017)

Facebook and Twitter are great platforms for engaging with your
potential clients and followers and promoting your content.

YouTube has become the second search engine after Google so

it is a great platform to post your video tutorials and webinars
on.

TIP: Never ignore comments and reviews even if they are

negative! Try to understand and solve the problem which the
user experiences.

13
5. Contribute to external online communities and blogs
This is a great chance to increase your company’s exposure and
to demonstrate professional knowledge and skills in your
industry. Especially in the software development and deep
programming field, there are always people who are willing to
learn online and other practitioners who are seeking advice on
online communities and forums.

This approach also involves guest blogging and link outreach.

Your company can offer content to be cited on another blog and
in return, you will publish a guest post on your blog. Or you can
offer your content to be linked to external website which is
dedicated to the Software development industry

You can also contribute to different groups on Social Media such

as LinkedIn or Facebook groups related to the industry you work
in. In this way, you will get involved in conversations with
professionals who can later become your partners or clients.

14
6. Educate your clients through Tutorial and Guides
Creating and distributing problem-solving content such as “How
to” tutorials and Best practices guides is a definitely a must for
your digital marketing strategy. Every business aims to stand out
from the crowd and beat the competition which is why
companies would invest in a new software product.

Understand what problems your prospects face and how your

products can solve them, and create educational content which
can be distributed through Social Media, website landing pages
or email. In return, you will be able to collect valuable
information about your followers and contact details which is a
great starting point for your email marketing strategy.

Email marketing is the perfect chance for you to get to know

your customers better. Acquiring a customer’s email addresses
is an open door for you to send out a promotion of your brand. It
helps to start a conversation or to keep them up-to-date with
your latest products.

15
7. Create a Solid Website
A website is a good tool to showcase your business, unique
selling options, videos and client testimonials. Visitors go to your
website for information regarding your company and offerings so
give them what they are looking for.

Improve the speed of your website, make it mobile friendly and

post relevant content. Including pricing pages will help you to
filter people who visit your website only to find out the price and
clients for whom price is the main purchasing factor.

Software development companies often have the technical

know-how of building a website. But there’s a lot more to a
website than the code itself. It’s about the corporate brand,
web design, user experience, and numerous marketing
techniques tailored for conversion rate optimization and
increasing the traffic from organic search and social media.

As the price and product have always been important factors for
the marketing, according to Walker`s report from 2013, the
customer experience is increasing its significance and is
expected to become the key differentiator by 2020.

16
8. Invest efforts and time in SEO
Effective SEO (Search Engine Optimization) strategies aim to
increase organic visitors to your website or blog which would
later be converted into leads, provided if you have followed the
steps so far.

Allocating enough time on strategic business development and

SEO at the same time is hardly ever accomplished by anybody.
You would probably not have the time to develop the additional
expertise yourself. Your SEO goals can be achieved if you
assign to employees/ agency and monitor the following steps:

 Make sure your website can be found by the search

engines
 Make sure your website loads fast. Page speed is
important both for Google ranking and user experience
 Make your website mobile friendly
 Make sure your website has reliable and updated
Sitemap and Site structure
 Pick the right keywords for your content

SEO may be tricky to master as a beginner, but it pays off in the

long run. The most straightforward thing you can start with is

17
identify which keywords will bring prospects to your site. You can
use keyword research tools to understand what words and
phrases your target market uses when searching for information
or products that your business provides.

9. Use contrast as key differentiator

Create a webpage comparing your products to your competitors`
ones, and you will have the chance to showcase what makes
your product/service outstanding and unique. If you structure
and present the comparison in the right context and avoid being
too pushy, you will help the reader to evaluate the offering
correctly.

Comparison web pages also contribute to better ranking by

including keywords focused on competitors` alternatives and
using “versus” e.g. Microsoft vs. Oracle.

10. Use precise language and avoid jargons

In software development, as in any other industry, there are
specific terms which you, as a professional, know and use.
However, the visitors on your website are likely to be unaware of
their meaning. If you use too many of those, your audience may
be unable to understand and relate to what you are
communicating.

18
IMPORTANCE OF STUDY

The market research starts with the ‘need’, and ends with ‘satisfactory’
results. The following certain key areas where a software company can
take the leverage of such research.

Help You Reach New Customers with New Product and Services

Is your company active enough to reach out to new customers? Having

a good and huge consumer database is not as easy as it seems to be. In
fact, expanding the customer database can turn out to be complicated.
This research helps Software Company to make right decision about
the product and services.

There are times when you think that a particular application, software
or service is useful for customers but the research may contradict your
belief. It may show that your targeted customers do not need your
product or your product is failing in meeting their requirements and so
on. The research can reveal similar such good customer oriented
information that will be advantageous for you to know. This will
revitalize your market position and make the entry of new product less
perilous.

Help You Understand the Competitors

In order to survive in this competitive market, this research helps you

in understanding and determining your competitor. You can get to
know what are the marketing networks, customer strategy, identity and
level of operations. This will help you in knowing the points at which
you are lacking. This also eradicates the condition of you leaving
behind the competition and assists you in surviving the competition. In

19
addition, this also covers the data regarding the segments for under-
served customers and their needs that have not been met.

Enhancing Your Profit

Market research allows you to get different methods for maximizing

your profit. It also allows you to get profit maximizing steps
information like customer profitability analysis and price elasticity. For
instance, market research on price elasticity will help you in
determining the effect of increase in price on sales and profit. This
point emphasis more on profitability, and swing company’s focus from
increasing sales to increasing profits of a company. This helps the
company to run long run and maximize its profits.

Polish Up Your Advertising

Company spends a lot of money to grab user’s attention. A perfect

market research will help you in knowing the effectiveness of your
advertisement among your competitors. Sometimes, market research
includes a preliminary research to gauge the aspects of products and
services. This also includes the factors that are influencing the
customers while advertising, so that you can advertise the most
required and relevant features by customers. According to a research
you should always avoid the rule ‘spend million to save billion’ while
advertising. Unknowingly do not spend million amount of money to
save your billion amount of business.

Augment Sales

You can increase the sales of your company by understanding

customer’s wants, attitude towards your products and gauging whether
your product fit the bill or not. The market research provides you with
exactly this. You can examine what are your present client’s
requirements and can get the idea for how to get it accomplished. In

20
addition, when you proceed for this mission, you may have a chance to
convert users into payable customers.

Apart from these, market research allows you to know overall industry
needs, which if equipped with proper management can lead your
company with better decisions. However, this is just a marketing tool
that helps you to make a knowledgeable decision. Hence, use this tool
as a guide and complement with intelligent decision-making.

CHAPTER 3

LITERATURE REVIEW

1. Successful software marketing plan proposed the steps

maximizes the market share of Software Company by using
good marketing plans. Customer service board plays a vital role
in the software sale. A good marketing strategy includes good
customer service, reliability of the company as well as
software. Making a customer circle in online such as social
blogs is very useful because whenever launching new software
it helps for promotion.

2. Highlight the features and specification in the landing pages.

One of the best ways to reduce the cost in software marketing is
to use affiliate marketers. Give salary only they achieve the
target. So the company doesn’t loss money. Only they get profit
when the target is achieved by affiliated marketers.

2. Mistakes done by Software company, the drawbacks of marketing

strategy in a software company. The company seeking to know about
what users are wants and don’t know about why that application is
needed by him. It changes the marketing plan of a company. By
analyzing the need of the customer makes good in marketing software.

Marketing strategy is more important for software companies now

than it has ever been. The computer software industry is undergoing
some major changes which are impacting software vendor business
models, as well as marketing and sales tactics. (Source: www.software-
marketing-advisor.com, 2012)The software product firms needs to be
competent in offering services with ever changing demands of the
dynamic marketing environment.

22
To overcome these barriers, the firms should deploy holistic marketing
strategies based on the established niche markets for specialized
software products. (Nigam, 2011). The marketing mix of the software
product is very flexible, as it is neither a pure service nor a pure
product. The marketing of the software product had to be dealt
sensitively otherwise the firms would lose its brand equity in the
market. (Nigam, 2011)Holistic marketing focuses on high degree of
correlation and interrelationship with firms marketing plan, customer
service and Internet advertising with core customer orientation.
(Nigam, 2011)

.A single case study is applied that analyzes the global marketing

strategy of a small software firm with five employees, that globalized
instantly and that serves global business-to-business markets by using
an Internet-based sales channel strategy.(Fuerst, 2010).India is one of
the strongest countries on the field of software development in the
world. India is a fast developing country (Niosi and Tschang,
2009).Many Indian software companies decide to export to the United
States because of their large and lucrative markets.

According to Niosi and Tschang (2009), these larger developed

markets are also the most mature and most ready to outsource
services.Implementation of holistic marketing in software products
processes considers four components which the traditional marketing
has not given the due importance. (Kotler et.al 2006).Another
characteristics of a successful marketing strategy is developing and
maintaining relationships (Bell, 1997; Moen et al., 2004)

.In terms of finding suitable partners, the main challenge for the
managers of a software company will be to balance the allocation of
resources between the expansion of the network through the current
relationships and a focus on establishing new relationships and
customers independent of existing networks.

23

Data Collection
Definition: The Data Collection is a process by which the
researcher collects the information from all the relevant sources to find
answers to the research problem, test the hypothesis and evaluate the
outcomes. collecting information from all the relevant sources to find
answers to the research problem, test the hypothesis and evaluate the
outcomes. Data collection methods can be divided into two categories:
secondary methods of data collection and primary methods of data
collection.

Secondary Data Collection Methods

Secondary data is a type of data that has already been published in

books, newspapers, magazines, journals, online portals etc. There is an

26
abundance of data available in these sources about your research area
in business studies, almost regardless of the nature of the research area.
Therefore, application of appropriate set of criteria to select secondary
data to be used in the study plays an important role in terms of
increasing the levels of research validity and reliability. These criteria
include, but not limited to date of publication, credential of the author,
reliability of the source, quality of discussions, depth of analyses, the
extent of contribution of the text to the development of the research
area etc.

Primary Data Collection Methods

Primary data collection methods can be divided into two groups:

quantitative and qualitative.

Quantitative data collection methods are based in mathematical

calculations in various formats. Methods of quantitative data collection
and analysis include questionnaires with closed-ended questions,
methods of correlation and regression, mean, mode and median and
others.

Quantitative methods are cheaper to apply and they can be applied

within shorter duration of time compared to qualitative methods.
Moreover, due to a high level of standardisation of quantitative
methods, it is easy to make comparisons of findings.

Qualitative research methods, on the contrary, do not involve numbers

or mathematical calculations. Qualitative research is closely associated
with words, sounds, feeling, emotions, colours and other elements that
are non-quantifiable.

Qualitative studies aim to ensure greater level of depth of

understanding and qualitative data collection methods include
interviews, questionnaires with open-ended questions, focus groups,

27
observation, game or role-playing, case studies etc.Your choice
between quantitative or qualitative methods of data collection depends
on the area of your research and the nature of research aims and
objectives.

SOME MISTAKES DONE BY SOFTWARE
INDUSTRY IN MARKETING

1. Asking what users want and not why Generally the marketing
people ask customers what is their need for the purpose of creating
software. But not why it is needed. When they ask why it is needed for
us ? It clarifies many things and shows the difficulties in creating such
software .

2. Lack of information/training before selling software gives detailed

information about the software. Lack of information or training makes
the customers unhappy. Some people of marketing not completely
explain the features and benefits of the software.

3. Accepting every requirement of customers without knowing

possibilities sometimes marketing people does not explain which is
possible to create and which is not possible to create at the present
scenario. In this cases customer expectation is increased and at the time
of delivery of software they thing something is not done. This reduces
the customer retention and generates complaints.

4.Lack of customer relationship the lack of customer relationship

creates unknowing of customer needs to the organization.

STEPS TO OVERCOME THIS MISTAKES

1. Explain the real benefits of the software.

2. Only tell about the true benefits of the software.

3. If the company creates on high expectation of on software is

good but at the same time it doesn’t satisfies expectation of
customer it creates .

4. It gives an uncomfortable feel to work in the application

Communicate clearly with the customer Ask the customer
needs and why it is needed? Give detailed information about
the software.

41
5. Clearly explains the benefit and features of the software before
sale.

USES OF MARKETING STRATEGY IN SOFTWARE

INDUSTRY

1. Maximize the profit.

2. Increase the customers.

3. Satisfies the customer needs.

4. Make customer retention.

42
CONCLUSION

From the following research conducted it can conclude

that –

1. Most of the people involved are male and most

of them belong between age of 20-24.

2. Most of the respondents are aware of the web

developing services provided by the company.

3. It is evident that people are aware about the

services but they never tried such services in the
current scenario.

4. But among most of the services, SEO is the

highly used service and after that SEM.

5. People refer these services to be reliable

enough to be used further.

6. Above all, people find these services helpful in

developing and effecting social platforms of the
people.

7. Promotional techniques used are mostly same.

some people did use and some didn’t. and
services are present in the reasonable amount.

8. From the research it is evident that people

found the services helpful and trustworthy to
be done.

43
SUGGESTION

From the above the data given , I conclude that companies

should first ,

 Should first focus on spreading the details and information

regarding the web services provided.

 Company should change their strategy continuously , for a

period of time and update all the techniques and technology.

 The marketing always helps in maximizing the profit and

maintain good customer relationship for the software industry
but in some cases wrong marketing objectives, plans and
strategies makes the software company into losses.

 Make market analysis and find the current trend in software

industry and then choose a appropriate marketing objectives
and strategies to maximize the profit.

 The software companies must work on updated knowledge,

updated technology, and customized offerings. Customer’s
experience includes the speed of deployment, ease of
configuration, access to support, and the simplicity of the
purchase process. This shows the software company for
executing any marketing strategy must have latest knowledge,
latest technology and offerings with customization.

LIMITATION

The sample size is restricted to 50 only. Due to lack of resource

constraints large samples could not be collected. The six limited factors
were taken for the study undertaken although additional factors could
have been taken.

The evolution of the first website:

45
I have done my research before I set out to help you, and my sources
reveal that Tim Berners-Lee was the person to create the first website
design as early as in the 90’s.
To be precise the exact date when the world got its first website is on
the 1st of August, 1991.
Almost 26 years have gone by since the first site was launched. Have
you ever wondered what was your first website like?

Let me tell you:

This first website has content that described what the World Wide Web
is all about and also it contains a few links.
The HTML page was a single-column design, and some inline links
were fused in. Don’t know whether the new gen kids like you have
ever seen what this resembles?
If you have had the luck to study the history of web designing or how
it evolved, you might be aware of the standard structure of HTML

46
pages that is more or less content based with a few tags like the
heading, paragraphs and links.
As time passed, newer versions started replacing these and also we had
updates like options to include images, tables, graphics and more…
The Web is the property of all and not any single person. So, there
should be some way to prevent individuals or organizations from
disturbing the built-in ecosystem of the web.
Emergence of the World Wide Web Consortium:
Commonly known as the W3 Consortium, which came to be formed
in the year 1994 brought along with it the standardization of the web.
It qualified HTML as the standard for marking up web pages.
As time passed, several changes evolved, and we got table-based
designs, followed by design over structure, flash based web designs,
Macromedia Shockwave, DHTML, 3DML, CSS-Based designs and
what not.

Future of Web Designs:

47
Let me be frank with the things, as we have discussed the Internet has
its roots of origin to somewhere back in the year 1969 and it took
almost more than 30 years for it to evolve and reach the common man
all around the world.
So, my point is there are several things around us, and it takes not more
than a minimum of 25-30 years for it to become a trend and an
inseparable part of our lives.
Let me take some other examples that include the CTSS Mail Service,
which came to be launched in the year 1965 but it was not until in the
1990’s that Email services became available for people all over the
world.
Similarly, the wearable computers that have become quite a trend now
have its origin somewhere in the 1980’s and today Apple iWatch,
Google Glasses and all are a part of our lives.
So, what you are doing today will become a trend for years to come.
These are examples of technology though the design is an equally
important thing. For that matter, if you check out the WordPress
plugins that we use, each has evolved over time with an improvement
in its functionality and beauty.

How can we connect technology and

web design?

48
As you see the kind of web designs that we have are responsive, single
page web design, material design, card design, etc.
The need for different types of designs depends on the content that you
are viewing and the kind of device that is being used to view the
content.
Some might use desktops, laptops, tablets, or mobile for accessing the
websites.
The way we view these digitized documents has not changed much as
cited by Nathan B. Weller.

So, where will this Contextual age

take us to?

49
Contextual computing is nothing but, there will be a point of time
when technology will trace what our needs are and what we are
yearning to, what we wish to do, and accordingly integrate all these to
make our lives easier without any botheration or effort from our side.
I just can’t wait to be a part of the Age of Context.

Understanding the Basics of Web Designing:

The basic role of a web designer entails one to employ several skill
sets in the production and maintenance of Web Sites. To deliver
appropriate quality, they would need to harness knowledge in the
following areas:
• Graphic design
• Interface design
• Authoring using standardized code and proprietary software
• User experience design
• Search engine optimization
While the above mentioned are merely enablers that help him or her
bag the job the real skill set required to enable them to keep the job
goes much deeper than this. It centers on the inherent need for a Web
Designer to possess an aesthetic sense and ability to empathize with
the audience to deliver an enhanced web viewing experience through
their designs.

51
Tools and Technologies:

Technology is ever evolving. As a result, Web designs based on these

technologies would also need to be redefined with every evolutionary
phase. Nevertheless, there are several standard tools which would
always be in demand by Web Designers. This include:
• HTML and CSS
• WYSIWYG editors like Dreamweaver
• Graphic Editors like Adobe Photoshop
• Programming skills
• Flash

52
Career Opportunities for web designers:

Web Designing is a promising career opportunity which displays

immense scope for interested candidates. In India, one of the biggest
industry, which provides a possible room for Web Designing as a
career opportunity is the IT or the software industry. Clients interested
in getting their online presence established are approaching the
software giants to get their Web sites designed. Therefore, the software
stalwarts recruit experienced professionals who would be sufficiently
qualified in executing the deliverables in quick turn around time.
Also, they also welcome Freshers, who are put through rigorous
training and then made to learn the ropes under the wings of the
experienced seniors. This provides them with an excellent opportunity
to learn the work hands-on.

53
Most organizations also recruit web designers for their internal projects
which have a distinct flavor of their own as it provides the opportunity
for Designers to interact with major company stakeholders who run
these internal initiatives.
Web Designers are also required in the Media Industry like News or
advertising agencies or even in the education industry developing
educational websites and learning material for students.

Future Roadmap:
With such a wide canvas it is little wonder that Web Designers can etch
out a promising roadmap for the future. Designers need to evolve
beyond rigid design boards and emerge as architects of a new change
which is redefining the traditional concepts of Web Design.

54
Mobility first, Responsive Designs, Minimalist look, Content first
approach are the new terminologies which need to be carved on their
easel broadening their canvas a tad bit more. The onus is on them
taking the cue and sketch out the new roadmap for the future.
