Q2. The 8-mm-diameter bolt is made of an aluminum alloy. It fits through a magnesium sleeve
that has an inner diameter of 12 mm and an outer diameter of 20 mm. If the original lengths
of the bolt and sleeve are 80 mm and 50 mm, respectively, determine the strains in the sleeve
and the bolt if the nut on the bolt is tightened so that the tension in the bolt is 8 kN. Assume
the material at A is rigid. Eal = 70 GPa, Emg = 45 GPa.

Q3. If the normal strain is defined in reference to the final length Δs’, that is
𝑛
′
𝛥𝑠 ′ − 𝛥𝑠
𝑒 = lim ( )
𝛥𝑠′→0 𝛥𝑠′
instead of in reference to the original length, the equation, show that the difference in these
strains is represented as a second-order term, namely, 𝑒 − 𝑒 ′ = 𝑒𝑒 ′ .
Q4. Here is an example of the single shear failure of a bolt. Using appropriate free-body
diagrams, explain why the bolt failed along the section between the plates, and not along
some intermediate section such as a–a.
Figure 3
Q5. The vertical load on the hook is 1000 lb. Draw the appropriate free-body diagrams and
determine the maximum average shear force on the pins at A, B, and C. Note that due to
symmetry four wheels are used to support the loading on the railing.

Q6. Bluewaters Island (Figure 5) is under construction 500 meters (1,600 ft) off the Jumeirah Beach
Residence coastline, near Dubai Marina, in Dubai, United Arab Emirates. It will feature the
$270 million Ain Dubai, a 210-metre (689 ft) tall giant Ferris wheel. It will become the
world’s tallest Ferris wheel when it opens in 2020.
Figure 5 Figure 6
Ain Dubai (Figure 6) will feature 48 capsules and a holding capacity of up to 1,400 visitors at
any given time – with a full rotation of the Ain Dubai taking 48 minutes. These double-
glazed pods will each measure roughly 10 m2. Tensile cables, 192 in number, fully support
the outer steel rim like thin spokes in a bicycle wheel. the weight of each permanent spoke
cable that holds the wheel rim in place is 5 tons. In total around 9000 tons of steel are used
create this fairground monstrosity. The 6.25 m diameter spindle is made of steel, which has
similar properties to the steel used for nuclear plants. The central spindle and hub (Figure 7)
weighs 1800 tons (equivalent to four A380 aircraft), spans 40 meters across and 20 meters in
height as it rests on top of four 126 m tall legs (Figure 8). The length of each permanent spoke
is longer than a professional football pitch.
Figure 7 Figure 8
Take assumptions for appropriate length of each permanent spoke, average capacity for each
capsule at a certain point in time and any other suitable assumptions. Calculate the average
shear stress on the central spindle that supports the capsules and spokes while assuming it to
be in double shear. (Use the videos below and example 1.9 for better understanding on how
to solve the problem)
