Sill Plate/Nailer Connection Design Based On NDS 2018

1. The document provides design criteria and input data for analyzing sill plate and nailer connections based on the 2018 NDS. 2. Key connection forces from wood framing to concrete/masonry include uplift, shear, and uniformly distributed loads. Wood member capacities always control the design. 3. Sample input data provided includes load magnitudes, number and spacing of anchor bolts, wood member sizes, and adjustment factors. Equations from the NDS are used to check capacities for uplift, shear and combined bending and shear.

Sill Plate/Nailer Connection Design Based on NDS 2018

DESIGN CRITERIA
1. There are three connection forces from wood to concrete/steel/masonry:
(1). Vertical/perpendicular force, which can be uplift or downward. The all uplift/tear force has to fully be supported by end holdown or steel ties.
Wood sill plate/nailer cannot transfer uplift/tear force. The downward force is compression on connection surface, which no capacity issu
(2). In plan shear force, which is from wood-frame diaphragm, supported by sill plate/nailer.
(3). Out of plan uniformly distributed load, which may be from wind/lateral loads, supported by sill plate/nailer.
2. Since concrete/steel/masonry is stronger than wood, wood capacities of sill plate/nailer always control the connection design, if anchor bolts reached
the minimum requirements based on ACI 318-14 or TMS 402
