The document summarizes key relationships between the volume and strength of a gearbox and factors like the number of teeth, gear diameter, speed, and horsepower rating. Specifically: 1) For a given design horsepower, the volume of a gearbox is directly proportional to the number of teeth and inversely proportional to the speed. 2) For gears of the same material and design strength, the volume is also directly proportional to the torque rating, which is directly proportional to the number of teeth and inversely proportional to the speed. 3) For a given horsepower, the kinetic energy of a gearbox is proportional to the cube of the gear diameter and directly proportional to speed if module is constant

Lecture – 02
Volume of Gearbox, its Strength and
Mass Moment of Inertia
(Ref: Elements of machine tools by M. Anwarul Azim)

Lecturer, Dept. of IPE, BUET.
Volume of Gearbox, its Strength and Mass Moment of Inertia

• The radial dimension of the gearbox is influenced by the gear diameter

and the axial dimension by the gear width. Hence the volume of the
gear influences the volume of the gearbox.
Volume of Gearbox, its Strength and Mass Moment of Inertia

• If it is assumed that all the gears are of the same material, their design
strength is also the same.

• The torque, Tor and design horsepower, P are

Volume of Gearbox, its Strength and Mass Moment of Inertia

• Multiplying both sides by d,

• For a given design power, P:

Volume of Gearbox, its Strength and Mass Moment of Inertia

i. For a given design horsepower, P the volume of gearbox, V is

directly proportional to the number of teeth, T and inversely
proportional to the speed, n.

ii. Again, for a given horsepower if the number of teeth is constant,

then

• Another requirements of a good design is the low value of the Kinetic

Energy (K.E.), so that the shaft speeds can be changed quickly.
Volume of Gearbox, its Strength and Mass Moment of Inertia

• For a given material (mass density constant) and horsepower:

Volume of Gearbox, its Strength and Mass Moment of Inertia
i. If the module is constant, the kinetic energy is proportional to the cube
of the diameter and directly proportional to the speed.

K .E.  d n 3

ii. If teeth number is constant, for a given horsepower the kinetic energy is
proportional to the square of the diameter of the gear and directly
proportional to the speed.
K .E.  d nT 2

K .E.  d n 2
