Study of Ferranti Effect and Shunt Compensation

1. The aim of the experiment was to study the Ferranti effect on a long transmission line and perform compensation under no load and loaded conditions. 2. Under no load conditions, the receiving end voltage was greater than the sending end voltage due to line capacitance (Ferranti effect). A shunt inductor was used to make the voltages equal. 3. With an inductive load, the receiving voltage decreased below the sending voltage due to reactive power consumption. Shunt capacitors were added to make the voltages equal again.

STUDY OF FERRANTI EFFECT AND SHUNT COMPENSATION

AIM

To study the Ferranti effect on the given long transmission line and perform suitable
compensation under no load and loaded condition.

PROCEDURE

1. Connections are made as per circuit diagram. Ensure that the line is not connected to any
load at the receiving end and keep the autotransformer in minimum position.
2. Switch ON the AC supply and vary the auto transformer to make the sending end voltage
to 230V.
3. Note down the receiving end voltage. (The receiving end voltage will be greater than
sending end voltage due to no load and capacitance in long transmission line) – Ferranti
Effect.
4. Switch ON the variable inductor at the receiving end and increase the reactance
value thereby making the receiving end voltage equal to the sending end voltage.
5. Connect the line to an Inductive load so that the receiving end voltage will be less than the
sending end voltage due to reactive power consumption.
6. Connect shunt capacitors at the receiving end one after the other so that the receiving end
voltage becomes equal to sending end voltage.

RESULT

The study of Ferranti effect on long transmission line is carried out and the effect of shunt
reactor and capacitor compensation is observed.
