1.1 Age

1.2 Gender

1.3 Grade

1.4 Choice of Career

2. What are the different factors that affects the course preferences of grade 12?

Significance of the Study

The study aimed to yield important empirical data which would serve as tools for self-

evaluation of the following beneficiaries:

School principals –the result of this study will help the principal to guide the students

to follow their desired course and give them full support.

Teachers – the result of this study will help them to guide their students about the

factors affecting the course preference by sharing/imparting their expertise and

experience to their students.

Students – the result of this study will guide the students and give information to

help them to choose what course they’re going to take by their desire, knowledge, skills

and abilities.

REVIEW OF RELATED LITERATURE AND STUDIES

This chapter presents and discusses the principles, concepts, and other significant

information gathered from related literature written by foreign and local authors. Moreover,

this chapter also includes similarities and differences in the findings of several studies that

have direct and indirect bearing on this study.

Review of related studies

Alexander et al.(0000)reported an extensive survey about career choice and associated motivational
factors amongst new students. The data were analyzed using some components of Social Cognitive
Career theory, namely external influences, self-efficacy beliefs and outcome expectations. The
research suggests the need for new strategies for marketing computer-related courses and the
avenues through which they are marketed. This can to some extent to be achieved by studying
strategies used by other (non-computer)university courses, and their professional bodies.Indeed, that
was a great suggest but in order to find strategies in other group it needs to be explored very well.

Mullanvathukkal(0000) Explored the career choices and awareness among students undertaking
graduate study in psychology in kerala. Results show that being a psychologist is the primary aim for
majority. There is a lack of awareness regarding other fields of practice. Students perceptions
regarding various facets of practice of psychology are also assessed. As a matter of fact, factors like
peer pressure, societal trends, peer influence, etc greatly effects the choice of decision.
PRES. DIOSDADO MACAPAGAL HIGH SCHOOL 5

Pascuala(0000)determined the factors affecting the fourth year high school students’ career preference
of University of Rizal System’ Laboratory School in Morong Rizal. The relationship of the factors
affecting students’ preference of course to their career preference, Brainard’s Occupational Preference
Inventory (BOPI)results, academic achievement and their elective grades were considered. The
findings revealed that the availability of work after college is the first consideration of students in
choosing a course in college. Most of the students prefer to take scientific related field courses, or the
“popular courses” for Filipinos. The least preferred course are in the Agricultural field. The BOPI
results showed that most of the student-respondents are suited to take professional courses.
Students’preferred course is related to their BOPI result as well as to their father’s
occupation.Indeed,In having a better plan for students a full support from school administrations,
guidance counselor and parents is needed.

Heleni et al.(2006)Investigate ways in which career preference affects academic

performance and graduation of male university students from a university in Western Region of Kenya.
Case study method was adopted and unstructured interviews were used to gather information from the
six study participants while a journal was kept throughout the study.
The study revealed that when parents forced their sons to take courses against their will at the
university, they harbored hatred, got demoralized, dissatisfied and frustrated towards the course. On
the basis of the findings, the study recommended that the parents ought to stop forcing their opinion
into their sons‟ careers since this caused frustrations among male students.Indeed, forcing a student to
take course against parents will is unwise.because they do not have interest of what course theyre
taking.

Chavez et al.(0000) determine the relevance of school factors in terms of

facultyandInstruction.Student services, Organization and Administration.Community Extensive,
Linkages & Research to the job placement of Engineering graduates. .Results revealed that the
engineering graduates believed that community extension, linkages and research have the highest
relevance to their job placement followed by student services, faculty and intruction institutions
should be aware of the image they project while dealing with the students and they should keep on
reminding their value as part of the students' development of future engineers and
professionals.Indeed, because the community extensive linkage helps to develop while the services
faculty only support your career path.

Deveci & Yiigit (2013) Homework Assignment Preference Scale for Science Course : A Validity and
Reliability Study. A pilot study was conducted with 155 middle school students, and the main study was
conducted with 924 middle school students. Exploratory factual analysis and principal components analysis
were conducted to ensure the construct validity of the scale. Hierarchical cluster analysis and confirmatory and
factor analysis we performed to confirm the emergent factor structures.

The literature lined up was reviewed in relation to the present study on the (main

topic).

The review of related studies and literature gave insights and served as a guide to

the researcher on how to proceed with her research work. It also helped the researcher in

the preparation of relevant questionnaire and provided ideas in the data gathering, treatment

and interpretation of data.

The discussion implied that the current study is not a duplication of any of the

reviewed local and foreign literature and studies.

To sum it up, all the above reviewed literature and studies contributed much in making

this study possible.

RESEARCH METHODOLOGY

This chapter deals with the discussion of the research method that was used in the

study, the venue, as well as the target population. It is likewise concerned with the types of

sampling scheme that was employed and the description of the subject-respondents. The

kinds of instruments and procedures in gathering data are similarly discussed.

PRES. DIOSDADO MACAPAGAL HIGH SCHOOL 7

Method of Research Used

With the primary objective of exploring the factors affecting the course preferences of

grade 12 students of President Diosdado Macapagal High School, the researcher deemed

that it was appropriate to use the descriptive research. According to (Manuel and Mendel

(2014), descriptive methods aims at involves description , recording , analysis and

interpretation of the present nature of a situation and its characteristics the existed at the

time of study and the explore the form action , changes of particular phenomenon

The main reasons in employing this method were to describe the nature of a situation

as it existed at the time of the study and to explore the causes of a particular phenomenon.

Population, Sample Size, and Sampling Technique

The population frame of this study included students from Pres. Diosdado Macapagal

High School located in Taguig City. In this study purposive sampling was adopted which is

a “method of sampling where the researcher deliberately chooses who to include in the study

based on their ability to provide necessary data” (Parahoo, 2007). The rationale for choosing

this approach was that the researcher was seeking knowledge about (main topic), which the

participants would provide by virtue of their experience.

Description of Respondents

In this study 10 respondents were randomly selected from the Senior High School

level of Pres. Diosdado Macapagal High School. The student-respondents were from the

different tracks: General Academic Strand (GAS) and Technical-Vocational and Livelihood
PRES. DIOSDADO MACAPAGAL HIGH SCHOOL 8

(TVL) track and from the different sections: Diamond, Emerald, Pearl, Ruby, Sapphire,

Alexandrite, Amethyst, Amber, Jasper.

Data-Gathering Procedure

The researchers sought the approval of the research adviser for conducting the

interview to the selected student-respondents. When this was granted, the researchers

prepared a letter of request to the research adviser to allow them to conduct the interview to

the student-respondents. On-site interviews and observations were the main data collection

techniques for the study (main topic). Secondary sources included documents provided the

participants that pertain to the study (main topic). Interviews were conducted

based on questions listed in Interview Guide (see Appendix C). However, participants were

allowed the freedom to talk about their experiences in a way in which they were comfortable

in (main topic).

As the interviews were conducted, the data elicited were appropriately analyzed to

answer the specific problems of this study.

Research Instrumentation

In gathering the data, researchers used one main tool, the interview guide. The interview
guide consists of two questions. This is to determine factors affecting course preferences
among grade 12 students. The key informants were requested to answer the questions ask
to them to the best of their knowledge listed on the interview guide.
