1. a) Identify various functional elements of Piston type pressure gauge (Rudimentary Pressure 8
gauge). Explain it with the help of neat diagram.

b) Identify and explain clearly modifying and interfering inputs for the following giving 10
reasons.
i) Electrical resistance strain gauge.
ii) U-tube manometer.
3. a) Derive equation of output response of first order instrument with step input. Also explain 8
salient features with suitable graph.
b) A thermometer with a time constant of 50 sec. has been used for measuring temperature 8
cycling with 500 sec time period. Calculate amplitude attenuation, phase angle and time
lag. If time constant is reduced to 40 sec, then what is change in amplitude attenuation for
same cyclic period.

6. a) Draw neat sketch of fly ball type mechanical tachometer and discuss its working with 7
suitable advantages and limitations.
7. a) Explain how temperature affects the performance of strain gauge ? What are the various 6
methods of compensating the temperature change ? Explain any one method.
b) A load cell is formed of a rectangular steel rod loaded axially. The four strain gages are so 10
connected as to enhance the signal and compensate the temperature variation. The load
cell has a cross sectional area of 2cm2. Young's modulus of steel 2.07 10 N / m2 and
Poisson's ratio 0.3. The strain gage resistance 1000 , Gage factor is 2.1.
The current in each strain gage is limited to 20 mA. Calculate :
i) The bridge supply voltage and
ii) Current in the detector arm if this consists of a microammeter of 500 resistance,
