Study of Power System Simulation - Power World Simulator: Experiment No: 1

Power world simulator is an interactive power system simulation software. It contains a robust power flow engine that can model systems up to 60,000 buses. It allows users to visualize the system through animated one-line diagrams and trace how transactions impact the system. The software also simulates power system evolution over time and includes tools like economic dispatch. The experiment studied the power world simulator and used it to generate a single line diagram of a given power network.

STUDY OF POWER SYSTEM SIMULATION –

POWER WORLD SIMULATOR
Aim:

i. To study about power world simulator software

ii. To generate single line diagram of a given network using the power world simulator
software.
Power world simulator:

Power world simulator is a power system simulation package designed from the ground up to be
user friendly and highly interactive. Simulator has the power for serious engineering analysis,
but it is also so interactive and graphical that it can be used to explain power system operations
to non technical audience.

Simulator is usually a number of integrated products. At its core is comprehensive, robust power
flow solution engine capable of efficiently solving systems up to 60,000 buses. This makes
simulator quite useful us a standalone power flow analysis package. Unlike other commercially
available power flow packages, simulator allows the user to visualize the system through the use
of full-colour animated one line diagram with full zooming and panning capability. A new
transaction may be established, all with a few mouse clicks. Simulator extensive use of graphics
animation greatly increases the users understanding of system characteristics, problem and
constraints, as well as of how to remedy them.

Simulator also provides a convenient medium for simulating the evolution of the power system
over time. Load, generation and interchange schedule variation over time may be prescribed and
the resulting changes in the power system condition may be visualized. This functionality may
be useful, in illustrating many issues associated with industry, restructuring etc.
In addition to these features, simulator boats integrated economics dispatch, area transaction
economic analysis, power transfer distribution factor (PTDP) computation, short circuit analysis
and contingency analysis, all accessible through a consistence and colorful visual interface.

To draw a Bus

i. Click on the network icon provided in the draw toolbar. Select bus icon from the network
and click on the workspace whenever needed.

ii. Then dialogue box will appear, we save the necessary data there and click ok button. The
bus will appear on the workspace, we can also extend the bus to the needed length.

To draw Transmission line

i. Click on the network icon provided in the draw toolbar. Select transmission line icon
from the network and single click on the ‘from’ bus and double click on the ‘to’ bus.

ii. Then dialogue box will appear, we save the necessary data there and click ok button. The
transmission line will appear on the workspace.

To draw Generator

i. Click on the network icon provided in the draw toolbar. Select generator icon from the
network and click on the corresponding bus whenever generator is needed.

ii. Then dialogue box will appear, we save the necessary data there and click ok button. The
generator will appear on the workspace.

To draw Transformer

i. Click on the network icon provided in the draw toolbar. Select transformer icon from the
network and single click on the ‘from’ bus and double click on the ‘to’ bus.

ii. Then dialogue box will appear, we save the necessary data there and click ok button. The
transformer will appear on the workspace.
To draw Load

i. Click on the network icon provided in the draw toolbar. Select load icon from the
network and click on the corresponding bus whenever generator is needed.

ii. Then dialogue box will appear, we save the necessary data there and click ok button. The
load will appear on the workspace.

Result:

Studied the power world simulator software and single line diagram of the given
network was generated using the power world simulator software.
