TEENAGE PREGNANCY
Information

Teenage pregnancy, also known as adolescent pregnancy, is pregnancy in a female under the age of
20. Pregnancy can occur with sexual intercourse after the start of ovulation, which can be before the first
menstrual period (menarche) but usually occurs after the onset of periods. In well-nourished females, the
first period usually takes place around the age of 12 or 13.
Pregnant teenagers face many of the same pregnancy related issues as other women. There are additional
concerns for those under the age of 15 as they are less likely to be physically developed to sustain a healthy
pregnancy or to give birth. For girls aged 15–19, risks are associated more with socioeconomic factors than
with the biological effects of age. Risks of low birth weight, premature labor, anemia, and pre-eclampsia are
connected to biological age, being observed in teen births even after controlling for other risk factors (such as
accessing prenatal care etc.).
Teenage pregnancies are associated with social issues, including lower educational levels and poverty.
Teenage pregnancy in developed countries is usually outside of marriage and is often associated with a social
stigma. Teenage pregnancy in developing countries often occurs within marriage and half are
planned. However, in these societies, early pregnancy may combine with malnutrition and poor health care
to cause medical problems. When used in combination, educational interventions and access to birth
control can reduce unintended teenage pregnancies. Wikipedia › wiki › Teenage_pregnancy

Problem

 low birth weight/premature birth

 anemia (low iron levels)
 high blood pressure/pregnancy-induced hypertension, PIH (can lead to preeclampsia)
 a higher rate of infant mortality (death)
 possible greater risk of cephalopelvic disproportion* (the baby’s head is wider than the pelvic
opening)

Stand
“stand” is on teenage pregnancy but the individual experiencing it. There is plenty of data to back
up outcomes of teenage pregnancy on income, continuing education and chances of having a
second pregnancy within 2 years. My personal opinion for teenage pregnancy is to educate and
empower young females to set educational and career goals before having children. An education
and a means of supporting a child benefits everyone.
For most it should be avoided, at least not having unplanned pregnancies, or without overseeing all
the consequences.

Most teen girls have no idea what being a parent means, they themselves still maturing, in their
brain at least (which will keep on maturing until 25 of even 30 yo!), many still children themselves.

What are the main causes of teenage pregnancy?
In developed countries however, teenage pregnancy is most often unintentional and due to a
variety of different reasons.

 Drugs and Alcohol.

 Low Socio-economic Status.
 Peer Pressure and Sexual Abuse.
 Media Influence.
 Mothers.
 Child.
 Family and Peer Support.
 Education/Knowledge.

What are the effects of teenage pregnancy?

In addition to higher rates of postpartum depression, teenage mothers have higher rates of
depression. They also have higher rates of suicidal ideation than their peers who aren't
mothers. Teen mothers are more likely to experience posttraumatic stress disorder (PTSD) than
other teenage women, as well.

How can we avoid teenage pregnancy?

In order to prevent teenage pregnancy, teenagers need to have a comprehensive
understanding of abstinence, contraceptive techniques, and consequences. Although there are
many different ways to prevent a teenage girl from becoming pregnant, the only one that is
absolutely effective is sexual abstinence.

Is teenage pregnancy a problem?

Teen pregnancies carry extra health risks to both the mother and the baby. Often, teens don't
get prenatal care soon enough, which can lead to problems later on. They have a higher risk
for pregnancy-related high blood pressure and its complications. Risks for the baby include
premature birth and a low birth weight.

Why is teenage pregnancy not good?

Teen pregnancy is bad and it can affect your life negatively. Teen pregnancy is unsatisfactory
because sometimes mothers have to give away their children because they can't take care of
them. Girls that have an unwanted pregnancy might have to go through a painful abortion that
can turn their life up-side-down.

What is the best way to prevent teenage pregnancy?

Talk with their teens about sex, including:

1. encouraging them not to have sex.

2. encouraging them to use effective birth control to prevent pregnancy, along with condoms to
protect against sexually transmitted diseases.

Who is at risk for teenage pregnancy?

Being pregnant as a teenager puts you at higher risk for having a baby born too early, with a
low birth weight and, tragically, higher risk of death. If a pregnancy is unplanned, the mother
may not be getting the prenatal care she and her baby need or may not even be healthy
enough to carry a child to term.
