LEARNING THE BASICS

SYSTEM
UNIT
ICT 002 - MS. ROMANIA RUIZ
LEARNING OBJECTIVES LEARNING OUTCOMES

Explain the functions of the hardware The students should be able to name
components commonly found inside the parts of the System Unit and how its
systemunit such as the CPU, Motherboard, PSU
functions and processes in a computer .
and others.

Understand how the system unit components

process program instructions and data.

INTRODUCTION

WHAT IS THIS TOPIC ABOUT ?

This discussion is about how the CPU , memory ,

and other components located inside the system unit
are arranged, its characteristics and how they perform
in processing tasks.

ICT 002 - MS. ROMANIA RUIZ

LET US START WITH A VIDEO PRESENTATION !
POWER SUPPLY WHAT IS A POWER SUPPLY UNIT ?

UNIT
A Power Supply Unit or PSU converts main AC to
low-voltage regulated DC power for the internal
components of a computer.
WHAT IS A MEMORY?

MEMORY Memory refers to chip- based storage.

ARE THERE TYPES OF MEMORY?

There are three types of memory:

RAM , ROM, AND FLASH MEMORY.

TYPES OF A MEMORY

RAM
Stands for Random Access Memory , is the computer's main
memory.

ROM
Stands for Read- Only Memory , are non-volatile chips located on
the motherboard onto which data or programs have been
permanently stored.

FLASH MEMORY
Is a type of non- volatile memory that can be erased and
reprogrammed.
WHAT IS A CENTRAL PROCESSING UNIT?
CENTRAL
PROCESSING UNIT
Central Processing Unit or also called CPU are
cirsuitry components packaged together and
connected directly to the motherboard .
COMPUTER CHIP
A very small piece of silicone or other semi-
MOTHERBOARD conducting material onto which integrated circuits
are embedded.

CIRCUIT BOARD
A thin board containing computer chips and other
electronic components.

MOTHERBOARD OR SYSTEM BOARD

The main circuit board inside the system unit.
THEN WHAT IS A SYSTEM UNIT?

SYSTEM UNIT
A System Unit is the main case of a computer.

It also contains storage devices , the power supply ,

cooling fans ,and the CPU.

With a desktop computer , it usually looks like a

rectangular box.
OTHER COMPONENTS OF A

SYSTEM UNIT
HEAT , FANS , HEAT SINKS , ETC.

COMPUTER HEAT

WHAT IS THIS ABOUT?

A Computer Heat is a continuing problem for CPU

and computer manufacturers.
FANS / COOLING FANS
WHAT IS THIS ABOUT?

These are used on most personal computers.

It is any fan inside, or attached to, a computer case

used for active cooling.

Fans are used to draw cooler air into the case from
the outside.
HEAT SINKS
WHAT IS THIS THING ABOUT?

Are small components typically made out of

aluminum with fins that help to dissipate heat.

A Heat Sink is a passive heat exchanger that transfers

the heat generated by an electronic or a mechanical
device to a fluid medium, often air or a liquid coolant,
where it is dissipated away from the device, thereby
allowing regulation of the device's temperature at
optimal levels.
WATER COOLING SYSTEM
WHAT IS A WATER COOLING SYSTEM?

Water cooling systems cool the computer with

liquid-filled tubes.
OTHER COOLING
METHODS
WHAT ARE OTHER COOLING METHODS?

Other cooling methods such as ion pump cooling

systems , are under development .
