EXPERIMENT 8- DISPERSE SYSTEMS (EMULSIONS)

1. COD LIVER EMULSION (ENGLISH METHOD/ WET GUM METHOD/ 4:2:1 METHOD*)
 PROCEDURE
 Triturate gum with water in a mortar to form a mucilage.
 Oil is added slowly in portions and then the mixture is triturated
 After adding the oil, thoroughly mix for several minutes to form the primary emulsion
 Once the primary emulsions have been formed, the remaining quantity of water is added to make the final
emulsion
 FORMULA
 Cod liver oil 60 ml
 Acacia 15 g
 Purified water q.s

To make 120 ml

2. TURPENTINE OIL EMULSION (CONTINENTAL METHOD/ DRY GUM METHOD/ 4:2:1 METHOD)
 PROCEDURE
 The gum is triturated with the oil in a dry mortar until thoroughly mixed.
 Two parts of water are added all at once and the mixture is triturated rapidly until the primary emulsion is
creamy white and produces a crackling sound to the movement of the pestle
 FORMULA
 Turpentine oil 60 ml
 Acacia 15 g
 Purified water q.s

To make 120 ml

3. METHYL SALICYLATE EMULSION (FORBES BOTTLE METHOD/ 2:2:1 METHOD)

 PROCEDURE
 Oil or water is first shaken thoroughly and vigorously with the computed amount of gum
 once this emulsified completely, the second liquid (either oil or water) is then added all at once
 the bottle is shaken vigorously to form the primary emulsion
 more of water is added in small portions with constant agitation after each addition to produce the final
volume
 FORMULA
 Methyl Salicylate 60 ml
 Acacia 15 g
 Purified water q.s

To make 120 ml
EXPERIMENT 9- MUCILAGE

4. ACACIA MUCILAGE
 PROCEDURE
 Dissolve the benzoic acid in 400 ml ( ) of purified water with the aid of heat
 Add the solution to 350 g ( ) of acacia in a mortar, triturating until the acacia is dissolved
 Add sufficient quantity of purified water to make 1000 ml ( ) strain if necessary
 FORMULA
 Acacia in small fragments 350 g
 Benzoic acid 2g
 Purified water q.s

To make 1000ml

5. TRAGACANTH MUCILAGE
 PROCEDURE
 Mix 75 ml ( ) of purified water with the glycerin in a tared vessel, heat to boiling
 Discontinue application of heat
 Add the tragacanth and the benzoic acid acid and macerate during 24 hours, stirring occasionally
 Add sufficient quantity of purified water to make the mucilage weigh 100 g ( )
 Stir actively until of uniform consistency and strain through muslin
 FORMULA
 Tragacanth 6g
 Benzoic acid 0.2 g
 Glycerin 18 g
 Purified water q.s

To make 100 g

EXPERIMENT 10- LINIMENTS

6. EFFICASCENT OIL LINIMENT

 PROCEDURE
 Place 20 ml of mineral oil in a flask
 Add camphor and stopper
 Heat gently over a steam bath until camphor dissolves
 Remove from heat and then add menthol. Agitate until dissolved
 Add methyl salicylate, eucalyptol oil, and add turpentine oil and mix
 Add q.s mineral oil to make 100 ml
 Add a drop of colorant if desired.
 FORMULA
 Camphor 7.5 g
 Menthol 6.5 g
 Eucalyptus oil 2 ml
 Methyl salicylate 14 ml
 Turpentine oil 5 ml
 Colorant 1 drop
 Mineral oil q.s

To make 100 ml

EXPERIMENT 11- COLLOIDAL DISPERSIONS (GELS AND MAGMAS)

7. ALUMINUM HYDOXUDE GEL, USP

 PROCEDURE
 Dissolve the sodium carbonate in 4000 ml of hot water and filter
 Dissolve ammonium alum in 2000 ml of hot water and filter into the carbonate solution with constant
stirring
 Then add 4000 ml of hot water and remove all gas
 Dilute to 80000 ml of cold water
 Collect and wash the ppt and suspend it in 2000 ml of purified water flavored with 0.01% peppermint and
preserve with 0.1% of sodium benzoate.
 Homogenize the resulting gel
 FORMULA
 Ammonium alum 800 g
 Sodium carbonate 1000 g
 Purified water q.s

To make 2000 ml

8. BENTONITE MAGMA, USP

 PROCEDURE
 To 800 ml of heated purified water, sprinkle upon it the bentonite, in portions allowing each portion to
become thoroughly wetted without stirring
 Allow to stand with occasionally stirring for 24 hours
 Stir until a uniform magma is obtained.
 Add sufficient quantity of purified water to make 1000 ml and mix
 FORMULA
 Bentonite 50 g
 Purified water q.s

To make 1000 ml
EXPERIMENT 12- LOTIONS

9. CALAMINE LOTION
 PROCEDURE
 Dilute the bentonite magma with an equal volume of calcium hydroxide soln
 Mix the powders intimately with the glycerin and about 100 ml of the diluted magma, triturating until a
smooth, uniform paste is formed
 Gradually incorporate the remainder of the diluted magma
 Finally add enough calcium hydroxide solution to make 1000 ml and shake well
