This lesson plan is for a grade 5 social studies class on map reading skills and locating Southern African countries. [1] The lesson will introduce students to the Southern African Development Community (SADC) and have them identify and locate SADC countries on a map of Africa. [2] The 40 minute lesson is divided into introduction, development, reinforcement, and conclusion sections where students will define SADC, list its member countries, and identify the SADC region on a map. [3] The teacher will assess if the learning objectives were achieved by having students locate the SADC countries at the end of the lesson.

INTRODUCTION: Arouse awareness and interest; connect to previous knowledge and


contextualize; state what the lesson is about AND determine level of current knowledge of
content to be taught.
PRESENTATION/DEVELOPMENT: Exploration of content. (Include: Time and language
skills; Content + vocabulary; Grouping; Teacher- and Learners’ activities; Check homework as
needed).
REINFORCEMENT: Inquiry and experimentation, learning support (enrich/remediate),
writing activity, game, assess if new learning has taken place based on pre-presentation
knowledge and give meaningful homework as needed.
CONCLUSION: Recap; utilization of knowledge; learners’ reflect on what they have learned,
what they enjoyed about the lesson; feed forward and so forth.
