Year One Goals and Rational

Currently, I have been taking courses offered by the Regional Professional Development

Program (RPRP) in my state. This program offers a unique set of literacy classes that are

specifically designed for kindergarten teachers. Each class focuses on a specific strand within a

content area such as classroom management, literacy stations, and writing. If all five of the

courses are taken, a special certificate is offered by RPDP. In order to receive my certificate, I

need to take the Sharing Text Course and the Small Group Literacy Instruction Course. The first

course will dive into the specific reading and foundational standards and how they should be

interpreted within our district. This will help me obtain a clear understanding of each standard

and how my instruction can meet these goals. The second course follows my professional goal of

becoming better at implementing instruction to meet the needs of all learners. This course will

teach me how to identify the needs of readers and cater small group instruction to meet their

learning goals.

Year Two Goals and Rational

In year two, I would like to take workshop courses offered by RPDP in order to obtain

ideas and teaching strategies that can be taken into my classroom straight away. Often times, a

teacher finds a routine or way of teaching that works for the teacher but may not follow current

learning practices or meet the needs of all their learners. I want to use as many teaching

strategies as I can within my classroom so all types of learners have the opportunity to engage in

a learning experience. For instance, the Integrating Technology into a Kindergarten Classroom

course will provide strategies for learners to engage with technology while also working with

academic content. This is a great way for tactile and visual learners to engage with content in a

meaningful and purposeful way. The SDE National Conference is a four-day event that gathers

educators across the United States to demonstrate their knowledge and provide a network for

teachers. This conference will not only provide new strategies that I can utilize within my own

class, it will provide an opportunity for me to network with teachers for learning opportunities

and support in the future.

Years Three Through Five

The final portion of my professional development plan will focus on completing and

obtaining National Board Certification. This program requires candidates to demonstrate a high

level of mastery in five areas in order to be effective leaders and have a high impact on student

learning. As a professional, I would like to demonstrate my knowledge but to also gain insight on

how to become the most effective teacher that I can be. Each component of the certification must

be completed within three years so I have broken it up into two parts. According to the National

Board website, “Study after study has proven that the students of Board-certified teachers learn

more — and the impact is greater for low-income students.” As a teacher, I want for my teaching

to be highly effective and believe this certification will allow me to do just that.
