GERMANY
In Germany Christmas starts on December 1st when the typical street markets of these holidays
appear.
The Christmas festivities begin to be celebrated from the 6th of December which is the day of San
Nicolas (the German Santa Claus) who brings gifts to the children that will be open after the dinner on
December 24th.
December 21th is also a day of celebration: it is the day of St. Thomas and all the inhabitants have the
freedom to be late for their work and make multiple jokes to anyone
SPECIAL TRADITIONS
At the street markets, Santa Claus himself welcomes the children who have the opportunity to cook
Christmas cookies and to make candles and all kinds of Christmas decorations with their hands.
On December 5th at night Santa Claus and his assistant Knecht Ruprecht visit the houses to evaluate
the behavior of the children. For those who behaved well throughout the year, Santa gives them sweets,
nuts and apples, while Knecht Ruprecht is responsible for punishing those who behaved badly.
After the Christmas dinner, the children wait impatiently for the moment to open their gifts. When the
bell rings - which is placed behind the closed door of the room - the kids come fast. Below the tree are
their presents, but they were unpacked when they finished singing "Stille Nacht, heilige Nacht" (Night
of Peace).
Children receive a calendar composed of a series of little doors, so that the wait for Christmas is shorter.
Each day they open one of the doors until the door opens on December 24th. Behind it is the Baby
Jesus.
It is a custom that all members of the family receive a plate full of sweets and fruits. Also people go to
mass at midnight.
Germans say goodbye to the old year toasting in honor of San Silvestre, and receive the New Year
with firecrackers and fireworks that aim to scare away evil spirits. It is a custom to leave on the plate,
until after midnight, some remains of what you have eaten, as a way of securing a well-stocked pantry
during the following year.
SCHILYTACH AND THE LAST CAVALCADE: it is a centuries-old tradition that takes place in Schiltach,
a small town in the Black Forest. After the last mass of the year, its inhabitants go home to get an old
lantern and a handwritten note book. At 8:15 am the church’s bells ring and a cavalcade begins that
doesn’t end until a couple of newlyweds ring the bells again.
IN SEARCH OF THE THREE KINGS: On January 5th a lot of countries of the world wait impatiently for
the arrival of the Three Kings, is possible to go out search of them. Throughout the year people from
all over the world come looking for the three kings in the cathedral of Cologne (it is the fourth largest
city in Germany). In this Gothic cathedral lie the remains of the three sages from the East.
