1. What is Philosophy?

In understanding what philosophy means, it is best begin with what we already know

about it. This common understanding consist of meaning that are readily available to us

for they can be gathered from how the term “ philosophy” is used in ordinary, everyday

conversations. Among the ordinary meaning given to philosophy is.

First, it refers to generally to ideas, views, principles, perspective, or beliefs held either

by individuals or groups of individual, regardless of the specific nature of these ideas,

principles, perspectives, or belief.

Second, it relates to the way we, Filipino, ordinarily use or understand the meaning of the

word “ pilosopo”

Third, it refers to an academic subject of course that is taught usually in colleges,

universities, and seminaries

The original meaning of philosophy is based on its etymology, is love of wisdom. The term

“ philosophy “ is an English translation of the Greek word “philosophia,” which is a

combination of two Greek words, namely, “ philo,” which means love, and “sophia,” which

means wisdom.

An educational philosophy is a personal statement of a teacher's guiding principles about

"big picture" education-related issues, such as how student learning and potential are

most effectively maximized, as well as the role of educators in the classroom, school,

community, and society. Philosophy in education is more on the first definition given

above that philosophy in education is more on general ideas, views and principle in

teaching.
The relevance of Philosophy to education.

People talk of philosophy without understanding its relevance to their field of education .

A general account of the term “philosophy” and its object may enable anyone to better

understand its relevance to education and almost all the other academic disciplines

The relevance of Philosophy to education is to represent answer to questions about the

purpose of schooling, the teacher’s role, what should be taught and by what method to

use.

Philosophy in Education is so important that in one point or another. It is the anchor or

the baseline in education that education is dependent on what philosophy we adhere in

our life. That we cannot teach on pure knowledge only, but to teach them also how to use

that knowledge well, and when to use that knowledge in the coming future, basically we

teach to be become a functional adult equip with knowledge and skills in order to survive,

Philosophy therefore is the guiding principle in teaching. It is where we tap, we consult,

we inquire and we refer the things we are to teach our learners. That is how relevant

philosophy is in education. It is not just a subject matter to discuss with, but a subject

matter that we uphold the rest of our teaching career. It is something that we carry in our

hearts no matter what we do in teaching our learners. It is something that should be innate

specially for us educators that we should not forget the philosophy we have even though

we are faced with pressures in what to do, and what to teach them. But this philosophy in

education should create in us a joy and a fulfillment that what we teach our learners is

what we wanted them to become in the future. That what we adhere in our hearts, will

also give us joy in teaching our students, and will ignite the passion we have for teaching.
