Science Measurement and Method: Name - Period - Due Date - Gold 9/14 and Green 9/15

This document outlines the requirements for a science lab assignment with multiple layers that students must complete in order. Layer C worth 30 points requires basic understanding tasks like unit conversions, lab equipment identification, temperature scales, and an experiment on hot solutions. Students must pass an exit quiz with 80% to advance. Layer B worth 30 points involves application and analysis through a formal lab report, new experiment design, and absolute zero research. Layer A worth 40 points focuses on synthesis and evaluation, including calculating heat transfer and creating a project demonstrating concept understanding. An objective quiz is also required.

Science Measurement and Method

Lab skills
1a. Identify questions, concepts, and testable hypotheses that guide scientific investigations.
1b. Design and safely conduct methodical scientific investigations, including experiments with controls.
1c. Use statistics to summarize, describe, analyze, and interpret results.
1d. Formulate and revise scientific investigations and models using logic and evidence.
1e. Use a variety of tools of measurement to improve accuracy and precision in investigations and communications.
1f. Communicate and defend scientific ideas.
1g. Mathematically represent large magnitudes of scale.
Phase Change and Heat
2a. Students know how to convert between the Celsius and Kelvin temperature scales.
2b. Students know there is no temperature lower than 0 Kelvin.

General Instructions:  Complete one “layer” before going on to another layer.  Each assignment has a
point value based on the amount of time and effort necessary to complete that task.  You must earn the
required number of points in any one layer before moving to the next layer.  Be prepared to discuss and
answer questions about each of your assignments.  Failure to do this will result in no credit for that
assignment.  You will be awarded points by your teacher based upon your ability to discuss and answer
questions about your work.  When appropriate, you may work with a partner or partners, but you must
be able to answer the teacher’s questions without any assistance.

Layer C.  Basic Understanding 30 points.  This C layer must be completed before beginning the B
layer.  Also you must pass the exit quiz over layer C with at least an 80
