Questions to Ask at the College

Academics (Will it work for me?)

 How will I obtain credit for AP, IB and/or college level courses completed? How many credits
will put me at junior status and will that increase my tuition/fees?
 Who teaches undergraduate classes? TAs? Adjuncts or full professors?
 Size of introductory/non-honors classes? Size of upper-division courses?
 How easy is it to fulfill honors requirements and how many who start in the honors program
actually complete it?
 What leadership opportunities does the honors program offer?
 Are there study abroad opportunities for my major? I’ve read that with CS program abroad
options might be somewhat limited.
 Are there internship opportunities in my major? Are they reserved for upperclassmen?
 What is the job placement rate, and are the job placements in line with the majors?
 Who recruits here?

Lifestyle (Will I like it here?)

 Are students active in student organizations? In extracurricular groups? Most popular?


 Is there a signature campus event or important school traditions? (Thon at PSU, Halloween at
UVA)
 Do the faculty and students seem to be friendly?
 How long can I live on campus? Ease of finding affordable off-campus housing?
 Greek life % of students who participate, importance in social activities
 Is Barrett dining reserved for Barrett students? Heard stories about Barrett kids not having
enough time to grab lunch between classes because non-barrett kids paid an upcharge to eat
there…kind of negates the point of having a special dining hall.
 Variety of food, menus, healthy choices

Cost (Can I afford it?)

 What does an average semester monthly budget look like?


 What are the hidden costs — those beyond tuition, room and board, books and student fees?
 Are there scholarship opportunities in my major once I am enrolled?

Questions to Ask Yourself

 What values can I identify that are important to this college? Are they important values to me?
 How is this school different from the other schools where I’ve been admitted and am
considering?
 Can I recognize the purpose of the weekend is to get me to like this school?
 Can I get what I’m looking for, and do what I want to do — learn, participate, lead, grow — at
this college?
 Does this college feel right? Why/why not?
 Campus safety

General

 How did you adjust to the campus environment? What did the school do to ease this
transition? What made you pick this school?
 Is the work manageable?
 What are your favorite and least favorite things about this university?
 If you could change one thing about this school, what would it be?
 What are some ways students can get involved in the school community?
 What events are unique to the school?

Housing/Food

 Are the dorms comfortable?


 What facilities are available in the residence halls?
 What’s your favorite food in the dining hall? Do they do special theme nights? What
foods do you avoid

Career services/alumni network

 How does the school help alumni with their future educational studies or post-grad
employment?
 Do career services help students find or place students in internships?

Majors/minors and Academics

 What made you choose your major?


 When do students typically declare their major?
 What are the most popular majors here?
 What’s your favorite class and why?
 Do professors make it easy to establish relationships and get help?
 How are the large intro classes to manage/learn? Have most of your classes been taught
by professors?
 Are there good supports in place for help? Is there a competitive or collaborative
mindset?

Transportation

 How far is the campus from malls, movie theaters, parks, etc.?
 Is there on-campus transportation?
 Can (or should) students have a car on campus?
