ESE CONVENTIONAL TEST – 4
Time Allowed: 3 Hours Maximum Marks: 200
INSTRUCTIONS
Please read each of the following instructions carefully before attempting
questions:
Candidates should attempt FOUR questions in all.
Question No.1 is compulsory. Out of the remaining FOUR questions
attempt any THREE.
All questions carry equal marks. The number of marks carried by a part of
a question is indicated against it.

01(g). A long rod of uniform rectangular section and
thickness t, originally straight, is bent into the form of a
circular arc and the displacement ‘d’ of the mid-point
of length L is measured by means of a dial gauge. The
displacement ‘d’ may be regarded as small compared
with length L. Show that the longitudinal surface strain
in the rod is given by = 4td/L2. (10M)

nuts are tightened, till the compressive load on the tube
is 5 kN. Determine the stresses in the rod and the tube
when the temperature of the assembly falls by 50C.
Take E for steel as 200 103 N/mm2 and copper 100
103 N/mm2 and coefficient of expansion for steel as
1210–6 perC and copper as 1810–6 per C

04(a). Two circular shafts AB and BC of the same material
but different diameter are welded together at point B as
shown in the figure. Ends A and C are fixed. An
external torque T0 is applied to the shafts at point B.

05(b). A rigid bar with negligible weight is hinged at O and
attached to two vertical rods at B and C as shown in
Fig Assuming the rods are initially stress free, what is
the maximum load P that can be applied at A so that
the maximum stresses in the steel and bronze rods do
not exceed 150 MPa and 70 MPa respectively? Area of
steel bar in 900 mm2, E for steel is 210 GPa and length
is 1.5m, Area of bronze bar is 300mm2, E for bronze is
84 GPa and length is 2m.
