Topic: Mobile Addiction

Problem Statement - Aim of this research is to what extent “Mobile addiction” constitutes
towards many health problems as well as poor academic performance in youth. In this research,
we are going to compare the result on the basis of gender, and the difference in contributing
factors to the male and female usage of mobile phone.

Why is this an important problem?

Mobile Addiction - This is a disorder involving compulsive overuse of the mobile devices, usually
quantified as the number of times users access their devices and /or the total amount of time
they are online over a specified period.

As we all know, it is almost impossible to stay without being in touch with gadgets and mobile
phones, according to a research there are almost 775.5 million mobile phone users in India and
this number is expected to rise 813.2 million by 2019.
We can’t really compel users from using mobile phones but we can aware them about the side
effects and can help them control the number of hours spent on electronic gadgets and can
provide a better lifestyle. If we can somehow control this problem there will be a lot of visible
changes :
❏ In today's generation, people are getting addicted to mobile and other gadgets for
trivial needs. It is making our life easier but at the same time has a lot of side
effects, that varies from physical harm to mental stress. Also following these
habits can directly result in Sedentary lifestyle. As nowadays, everything is
available on the internet which is making the youth lazy that they find ways not to
step out of the house. If manage to focus less on wasting our times on these
gadgets we can utilize that time on focusing on our health by exercising, walking
and socializing to people in real life rather than using these online platforms for
socializing.
❏ With the growing world, we need to keep updating ourselves so isolating from
gadgets is not a solution we have. By conducting this research we are trying to
find out how much people are addicted to mobile phones and to what extent it is
damaging our societies growth.

Rationale (can problem be solved? What is the benefit to society if the problem is
solved?)
We can provide the results of the surveys to people and show people where they stand in the
scale of addiction. They can join help groups or we can counsel them to control their urge and
habits. Seeing this data is just a first step, parallelly there are many technologies that help to
monitor health on daily basis and provides result instantaneously. For example, owning a Fitbit
tells you how many daily steps you’re taking, but at the same time volunteering yourself is the
most important step, actions like jumping off the bus couple of stops early or taking a daily
walk, that get you, fitter.

Methodology
We are targeting the age group of 15-26 for the research of this project.
Why are we including this age group?
According to current studies it can be observed that this age group is the most active
among all age-groups in using mobile phones. Moreover, we can only collect data from
this age group (as we are conducting all the experiments and surveys among college
students)
Type of Study:
We are performing an observational study along with surveys. In the observational study
we will be doing a Cross-Sectional study, as we will be observing a group of people
particularly from our college ( B.Tech, M.Tech, PhD students separately) through a set of
questions that will judge them on basis of their answers whether they are addicted to
their mobile phones or not and will study the pattern of their addiction.

Survey - It will be based on the daily habit of people and their involvement with mobile
phones to speculate our conclusion and fulfil our objective.

What all we will be measuring

Average No of hours spent on mobile phones

Creating a proper distribution of data on various activities based on mathematical
models like a probability distribution.
Percentage of people feeling the urge to use their mobile phones in a given time span.
The average amount of time they can stay without using their mobile phones.
What are the most visited apps or most common activities they perform on their forms?

e will take consent from the people whom we are surveying and
Ethical consideration - w
for minors below 18 years, we will take consent from their parents.
Sample selection - w e will use a cluster sampling method. We are going to survey
people from different batches with a different background. Students will be picked
randomly.
Sample size - sample size will be 10-15 students from different sections.

What do we expect at the end of Research:

What has been the major cause of mobile addiction in young adults? How much is it
affecting society? Is there any effective way of dealing with it?
❏ Workplan:

❏ Analysing all the current research papers

❏ Creating a survey and what all do we expect from it is creating our first
protocol.
❏ Floating a the survey and Combining the results of the survey.
❏ Analysing the results of a survey.
❏ Using Probability distribution models to form proper results and inferences of the
survey.
❏ Concluding the whole research and deliver the results
