ALPHABETS
The letters from A to Z are called alphabets. These are 26 letters in English.
There are two types of letters. 1. Vowels 2. Consonants
Vowels : The letters which help other letters to make proper sound are called “Vowel”. Five letters
“a, e, i, o and u” are used as “Vowel”.
Consonants : Except vowels, all English letters are called “Consonants”.
There are 21 letters “b, c, d, f, g, h, j, k, l, m, n, p, q, r, s, t, v, w, x, y, z” are used as “Consonants”.
SENTENCE
A meaningful group of words is called a sentence.
Parts of a Sentence(SVO Pattern)
There are three parts of a sentence.
1. Subject: One who does some work is called a “Subject”.
2. Verb: A word which shows some action is called a “Verb”.
3. Object: Something on which some work is done is called an “Object”.
Kinds of a Sentences(Meaning wise)
Declarative (Positive) Sentence
A declarative sentence makes a statement. A declarative sentence ends with a full stop. Example:
My friends are waiting for me.
Interrogative Sentence
An interrogative sentence asks a question. An interrogative sentence ends with a question mark.
Example: Are you happy today?
Negative Sentence
The sentence that negates something is called a negative sentence. It ends with a full stop.
Example: You are not brave.
Imperative Sentence
An imperative sentence expresses a command or a request. It tells or asks someone to do
something. It ends with a full stop.
Example: Call your friend. Please do not shout.
Exclamatory Sentence
An exclamatory sentence expresses excitement or strong feeling. It ends with a mark of
exclamation (!) Example: What a pretty flower!
Optative Sentence
It expresses some desire, pray or curse. It ends with a mark of exclamation (!) Example: May you
live long!
Syllable
Syllable is the smallest unit of sound in a word. Each syllable is formed with the blending of a vowel
sound: (a,e,i,o,u) and consonant sounds. Syllable help in breaking words into smaller units for ease
of spelling and pronunciation. The word Hotel has two syllable; Ho and tel.
Examples: 1 syllable (pen, gun) 2 syllable (wa-ter, ri-ver)
3 syllable (but-ter-fly, car-pen-ter, sa-tur-day, te-le-phone)
4 syllable (wa-ter-me-lon, cal-cu-la-tor, con-ver-ti-ble)
Rhyming words
Words which have same sounds are called rhyming words.
Examples: (bat, cat) (pen, hen) (king, ring) (book, cook) (duck, luck)
Articles (A, An and The)
It is a word that is used before a noun to show whether the noun refers to something specific or
not. There are three articles.
1. Indefinite Articles (A and An)
A and an are used to refer to a singular nouns that are not specific or particular.
Use of “a”
Article “a” is used before a consonant sound.
Examples: a book, a kite, a chair, a uniform etc.
Use of “an”
Article “an” is used before a vowel sound.
Examples: an apple, an ant, an umbrella etc.
2. 2. Definite Article (The)
Use of “the”
The is used to refer to a specific or particular noun.
Examples: The Indus, The sun, The Holy Quran etc.
Digraph
Two letters of English which give a different sound when joined together are called digraph.
Beginning Digraph Examples: Ship, Chart, There etc.
Ending Digraph Examples: Path, Truth, Math etc.
Hard and Soft Sounds of “C” and “G”
Letter “C” gives a hard sound of letter “K” when it is followed by “a”, “o” or “u”. When it is followed
by “e”, “I” or “y” it gives soft sound of “S”. Similarly when “G” is followed by “a”, “o” or “u” it gives
hard sound. When it is followed by “e”, “I” or “y” it gives soft sound of “J”.
Examples of Hard sound (C): cut, cat, cold etc.
Examples of Soft sound (C): city, cycle, cement etc.
Examples of Hard sound (G): God, gun, game etc.
Examples of Soft sound (G): germ, giant, gym etc.
NOUNS
Noun : A noun is a name of a person, place or thing.
Example: Ali, house, Lahore, table etc.
Common nouns: Common nouns talk about a general person, place or thing. They do not start with
a capital letter. Examples: girl, chair
Proper nouns: Proper nouns talk about a special person, place or thing. They always start with a
capital letter. Examples: Pakistan, Quaid-e-Azam etc.
Countable nouns: Countable nouns are those nouns that can be counted. Examples: book, cap,
table etc.
Uncountable nouns: Uncountable nouns are those nouns that cannot be counted. Examples: gas,
sugar, love, salt etc.
Collective nouns: Collective nouns are used to define a group of people, animals or things.
Examples: army, team, flock etc. Singular nouns: A singular noun names one person place or thing.
Examples: a pencil, a pen, a book etc.
Plural nouns: Plurals of nouns are formed in many different ways.
1. Add s to form the plural of most nouns:
Examples: desk—desks, computer—computers etc.
2. Add es to form the plural of nouns that end in s, sh, ch, or x.
Examples: bush—bushes, lunch—lunches, fox—foxes etc.
3. When a noun ends in a consonant followed by y, change the y to ies. Examples: lady—ladies,
hobby—hobbies etc.
4. When a noun ends in a vowel followed by y add s. Examples: donkey—donkeys, valley--valleys etc.
5. For some nouns that end in f or fe, change the f to ves.
Examples: wife—wives, calf—calves etc.
Masculine nouns: A noun has a masculine gender if it refers to a man, boy or male animal.
Examples: brother, father, bull etc.
Feminine nouns: A noun has a feminine gender if it refers to a woman, girl or female animal.
Examples: sister, mother, cow etc.
PRONOUNS
A pronoun is a word that is used in place of a noun.
Examples: he, she, it, they, I, we or you etc.
SUBJECT PRONOUN
A subject pronoun is a pronoun that is used as the subject of a sentence. He, she, it, I, we, you and
they are subject pronouns.
POSSESSIVE PRONOUN
Possessive pronouns are those pronouns that tell us who owns something. Mine, its, yours, ours
and theirs are possessive pronouns.
OBJECT PRONOUN
An object pronoun is a pronoun that is used in place of a noun that receives the action of the verb.
Her, him, it, me, them, us and you are object pronouns.
ADVERBS
An adverb can describe a verb, an adjective or another adverb in a sentence.
Examples: slowly, happily, loudly, softly, carefully or downstairs etc.
TYPES OF ADVERBS
MANNER: Adverbs of manner explain how something happens.
Examples: quietly, excitedly, happily, loudly, carefully, hard, well or fast etc
TIME: Adverbs of time explain when and how often something happens.
Examples: always, early, soon, today, later, now, tomorrow or sometime etc.
VERB
It is used to describe what action is being performed by the subject.
Examples: eat, sleep, drink, play, sit, stand, smile, read and write etc.
REGULAR VERBS: Regular verbs are those verbs whose past tense and past participles are formed
by adding the suffix “-d” or “-ed”.(Roll-Rolled-Rolled).
IRREGULAR VERBS: Irregular verbs are those verbs that look completely different from the original
in their past tense or past participle form.
Examples: (do—did—don) (eat—ate—eaten)
ADJECTIVES
It gives information about quantity, quality, size, shape, colour or origin of an object.
QUANTITY: Adjectives can tell us how many nouns are being talked about in a sentence.
Examples: many, much, enough, some, fifty, whole, half or every etc.
QUALITY: Adjectives can tell us the nature of the noun that is being talked about in a sentence.
Examples: brave, sweet, beautiful, young, kind, famous or naughty etc.
SIZE: Adjectives can tell us how much space is occupied by the noun being talked about in a
sentence.
Examples: huge, small, big tiny, tall, short or large etc.
SHAPE: Adjectives can tell us about the form of the noun being talked about in a sentence.
Examples: square, round, oval, curved, rectangular, straight or narrow etc.
COLOUR: Adjectives can tell us about the colour of the noun being talked about in a sentence.
Examples: bright, dull, black, dark, light, yellow, red, blue or green etc.
ORIGIN: Adjectives can tell us the source of the noun being talked about in a sentence.
Examples: Northern, Eastern, Pakistani, Indian, Hyderabadi or American etc.
PREPOSITIONS
Words that show location are called prepositions. Prepositions are helpful in showing where
something is.
Examples: above, at, before, behind, in, near, on, under, by, up or down etc.`
CONJUNCTIONS
The words “and”, “or” and “but” are called conjunction or joining words, because they help to join
two parts of a sentence.
The word “and” is used when we want to add information to a sentence.
Example: I like tea and coffee.
The word “or” is used to show that we have a choice.
Example: You will have tea or coffee.
The word “but” is used to show information that is different or unexpected.
Example: Hassan likes fish but Tariq likes meat.
THE “WH” QUESTIONS
The “wh” questions help us seek information. They begin with one of the eight “wh” words.
WHAT: “What is your name?”
WHO: “Who is your best friend?”
WHERE: “Where are you going?”
WHEN: “When did you arrive home?”
WHY: “Why did you school miss school yesterday?”
WHOSE: “Whose bag is this?”
WHICH: “Which of these books is yours?”
Whom: “Whom did you see?”
HOW: “How are you feeling today?”
COMPOUND WORDS
A compound word is a word that is made up of two or more other words. For example the word
sunflower is made up of two words: sun and flower.
Some examples of compound words are: wheelchair, cupboard, toothbrush.

neat and clean dress. 5. She is an honest and kind. 6. She leads a simple life. 7. She helps the
poor and the needy. 8. She says his prayers regularly. 9. She does her duty well. 10. She is a

MORAL STORIES
Q.1 Write a story using the given hints and write a suitable title and moral for the story.
The following hints may give you some ideas but you are free to use your own ideas.
A thirsty crow…..Saw a pitcher of water….The water was low…..Put some stones into the
pitcher……Water rose up…..The crow drank it and flew away.
1. THIRSTY CROW
Once there was a crow. He was very thirsty. He flew here and there in search of water but failed.
He saw a pitcher. There was a little water in it. He thought a plan. He put some stones in it .The
water rose up. He drank and flew away.
Moral: 1 God helps those who help themselves
2. Necessity is the mother of invention
3. No pain no gain 4. Try, try again
Q,2 Write a story using the given hints and write a suitable title and moral for the story.
The following hints may give you some ideas but you are free to use your own ideas.
A hungry dog…….Found a bone and ran to some safe place……Crossed a stream on its way to find
a safe place to eat the bone……Saw its own shadow in the stream….Barked at the shadow and
lost his bone.
2. GREEDY DOG
There was a dog. He was very hungry. He went to a butcher’s shop. He stole a piece of meat.
There was a stream on his way. When he crossed, he saw his own shadow in the water. He
opened his mouth to bark. He lost his own piece of meat.
Moral: Greed is curse.
Q.3 Write a story using the given hints and write a suitable title and moral for the story.

A poor woodcutter….Cutting branches with an iron axe……Axe fell down into the
river…..Appearance of a angel……Offered him gold and silver axes…..Woodcutter refused to take
them…..Got reward for his honesty.
3. HONESTY IS THE BEST POLICY
Once a woodcutter was cutting a tree. By chance his axe slipped and fell into the river. He began
to weep. Suddenly the angel appeared. He asked the woodcutter, “Why are you weeping?” The
woodcutter told him the whole story. The angel took pity on him. He dived into the water and
brought a golden axe. The woodcutter refused to take it. He dived again and brought out a silver
axe. The woodcutter refused to take it. He dived again and brought out an iron axe. The
woodcutter accepted it. The angel was so pleased that he gave him all the axes as a reward of his
honesty.
Moral: Honesty is the best policy
Q.4 Write a story using the given hints and write a suitable title and moral for the story.

An old man and his three sons…..The sons always quarreled with one another…..Asked them to
break the bundle of sticks….No one could break….Each one easily broke, when the sticks were
untied…..The old man gave them the advice to be united.
4. AN OLD MAN AND HIS SONS
Once there was an old man. He had three sons. They always quarreled among themselves. He
was worried. He hit a plan. He brought a bundle of sticks. He ordered his sons to break one by
one. They tried their best but could not. He untied the bundle and asked them to break the sticks
one by one. They broke them easily. He advised them to remain united. His sons promised to
remain united in future.
Moral: 1. Union is strength.
2. United you stand, divided you fall.

A man had a hen…..The hen laid golden eggs……The man wanted to get rich faster…..Tried to get
more eggs…….The hen died.
5. THE HEN WHICH LAYS GOLDEN EGGS
Once a man had a hen which laid a golden egg every day. He was very greedy man by nature. He
wanted to get a lot of wealth at once. So, he decided to kill the hen in order to get all the golden
eggs. He slaughtered it. He found that there was no egg in its belly. He started weeping bitterly
but all in vain.
Moral: Greed is curse.
Q.6 Write a story using the given hints and write a suitable title and moral for the story.

A hare and a tortoise were friends…..The hare laughs at the slow speed of the tortoise…..The
tortoise challenges the hare to run a race…..They run……The hare sleeps on the way…….The
tortoise goes on slowly and steadily…..He wins the race.
6. THE HARE AND THE TORTOISE
Once a hare and a tortoise were friends. The hare was very proud of his speed. He challenged him
to run a race. The tortoise accepted his challenged to run a race. They started together .The hare
ran very fast. He left the tortoise far behind. He lay down under a tree and fell asleep. But the
tortoise moved on slowly and steadily until he reached the winning post. The hare woke up and
saw that the tortoise was already there.
Moral: Slow and steady wins the race.
Q.7 Write a story using the given hints and write a suitable title and moral for the story.

A hungry fox running……Reached an orchard…..Saw a bunch of ripe grapes on a height……Jumped
again and again……..Disappointed and left.
7. THE FOX AND THE GRAPES
Once there was a fox. He was very hungry. He went here and there in search of food. But he
could not find anything to eat. At last he went to a garden. He saw a bunch of grapes there. He
tried to get it. He jumped again and again but could not reach them. At last, he went away saying,

Once the Holy Prophet ( )ﷺwas travelling somewhere with his companions. On the way, one of
his companions saw a nest of sparrows. The sparrows were singing with joy. He picked up the
sparrow chicks from the nest. All the sparrows came crying. The Holy Prophet ( )ﷺasked his
companions the reason of their crying. The companion told that he had taken the chicks out of
the nest. The Holy Prophet ( )ﷺadvised him to put back the baby sparrows in the nest. He did so
and the sparrows felt happy and stopped crying. This example teaches us that we should be kind
to animals.
A rich man had only one son. The son did not have company of good friends. He adopted many bad
habits. The man was much worried about the bad habits of his sons. He tried his best to mend his
habits but he could not succeed. One day he thought of a plan to teach him a lesson. He went to
market and bought some fresh apples and a rotten one. He came back to home and called the son.
He asked the son to put all the apples along with the rotten one in the cupboard. The son did the
same. After some days father asked the son to bring the apples. As he opened the door of
cupboard, he was surprised to note that all the apples had become rotten. He got sad. At this time
his father told him to see how one rotten apple had spoiled all the rest. In the up bad company and
became good again.
A city mouse went to visit his poor cousin in the village. The city mouse was surprised at how hard
was to find food. In the village, they had to search for food all the time. He told his poor relative
